Which is a surprise to me, and I've been meaning to write the author and thank him for broadening my literary horizons. Up to now, I've gravitated to stories where the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, no in-between. I used to tell people I hated books and movies where the protagonists are con-artists, thieves, mafia, etc. Now here comes a series of books where demons and tricksters have their own brand of nobility. The main characters are likable and the plot is engaging and suspenseful. This most recent one is still a bit dark for me (but that's just me) and that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. But I remain intrigued and am looking forward to the next in the series. And also hoping for more Harmony Black.

The Faust # 6 book, The Castle Doctrine
Daniel Faust, a man of questionable character lives a life of persistent dilemmas which keep him on a runaway train riding on twisted broken tracks. His eagerness to solve the mysteries which threaten his life and those he loves drives him to sanguinary extremes, and his posse armed with dark occult authority are his allies. There is a twist in the moral fiber of Faust, however, and as you follow his adventures you learn to love this convoluted, magical con man, who at the very worst of times and within an inch of the end of his life conjures up a way out usually scathed but alive. His code is to kill only those who deserve to die, but admits to having wandered from this path for the sake of survival. But he is a man of principles always with a cause, not a loose cannon, unbridled. He is thoughtful and driven. Craig Schaefer is an amazing author who synthesizes Faust's character in such a way that that this inveterate criminal is always a hero saving friends, family or the world with his shady, occult, underworld and netherworld posse. This 6th edition of the escapades of Faust is no different than the prior editions, fast, furious, hilarious, dark and worthwhile reading.

Keeps the series fresh and engaging
I've read books 1-5, so this is obviously going to be a biased interview. Schaefer is a terrific writer who knows how to create interesting plot, character, and pacing to keep the reader rushing as fast as his characters to finish the book. Great series and lots of fun! Highly recommended!

You can't give away your DNA, your genome in your Last Will and Testament
I am so tired of the cambions, the half-blood demons. Because they are biologically impossible. Suppose a demon possesses a human body, and uses it to make a child with another human. Who are the parents? The human - and the possessed human. The demon is only mind. Both sperm and ovum are human. Even two possesed humans only have human DNA. Half-demons don't exist. A corporal demon would be different, of course. As it is, I can't suspend my disbelief. My fun is ruined. Daniel doesn't understand biology. Maybe the writer doesn't either, it seems so. Daniel hates his father, he rejects him. To Daniel, Bentley and Corman are his real fathers, because they took care of him. Morally true. Legaly true, if they adopted him. But biologically a lie. Between them, they can't give Daniel a single base pair of DNA. We can walk away from our blood family, get a family we love, but actually, that family is only friends. We can't get rid of our DNA. It seems magic is inherited in this universe. Where did Daniel get his magic? From his father, or his mother? Or both? Is Daniel's little brother actually dead? Could make a good story.

Another amazing Daniel Faust
It is hard to believe that the books keep getting better, but they do. Daniel grows in this book. The characters are so diverse but they manage to work together as a team. I am a huge Caitlin and Daniel fan. Kuddos for not doing the angsty relationship. They are adults who chose to be with each other and have each others back. Imagine a book that is good and plot worthy without having to rely on the repetitive will they or won't they relationship. The writing keeps you engaged from page one. I was supposed to save the book for a long plane ride, but mistakenly read the first chapter and was hooked. If you haven't read the Daniel Faust series, you are missing out.

Good Plot Developments, but Rushed
Not as good as the previous books in the series, but he complicates the overall plot arc of the series and provides some good background for the next book in the series - sets the protagonist up. But I felt this one was much more rushed than the last books. Perhaps it was simply too ambitious, attempting to accomplish too much, or maybe the writer is bored with the character and story-line. I hope not, because I'm buying the next one, I'm hooked on Faust, and I think he is going in some interesting directions, complicating Faust's journey in interesting ways, but the novel came off as way too rushed. I'm sticking with it, and I think there are four star plot elements in here, but they are dealt with in three star ways.

Another good entry to the series
Another good entry to the series. Craig Shaefer has quickly become one of my favorite authors in this style. I'm loving the longer story arc with the smiling man and the binding story. All in all, if you liked the first few books, you will like this one.

Another excellent Book in the Daniel Faust series. This book is equally as good as the previous titles. Action packed with loads of twists and turns and Daniel fighting not only for himself his friends and family but for the world too. It's so full that every page has something exciting happening. It's an exciting and gripping story that has you addicted from the start. It draws you in page after page and after reading all the previous titles you actually feel part of the Family and have learnt and grown with them. I can't wait to see what happens with the enemy and what dan does to escape his clutches. Sounds like another exciting title in the series to follow. I'd definitely recommend not just this book. But the whole Daniel Faust series.

The pace in this series never lets up! Once again I sat down for a few minutes, and it is now dark and I've read the book! A brilliant read if you like the sparkle of magic in your world!

Very enjoyable, fast-paced and lots of favourite characters make an appearance. If you've not read any of the Faust series before, do start at the beginning rather than here. I struggled a bit with the previous book in the series as it was a bit different in style, but this is much more in line with the previous books in the series. That said, the last book makes more sense, having read this one. If you enjoy the Dresden series, do try Faust.

The plot thickens. Getting darker and more violent as the series go on, Daniel has now breached the last of his self imposed codes and is now one mean B...........! The King of Worms declines the kill, Harmony Black has bought a WW II flame thrower, Nadine and Nyx are just a tad pee'd off with Daniel....wow, I cannot wait for the next episode / installment /book......whatever :-)
