Ubiquiti US-8 Unifi Switch,Silver

Unifi controller software is fantastic. I got the gateway, this switch and an access point 2 years ago for about 335$, and the slight cost increase from your conventional router is a worth it 8 days a week. Look at it this way, if one component breaks, then you’re replacing a 100$ component, instead of a 2-300+$ all in one router that are so common these days. I have the software running on the same Old gen 6 Hp proliant duel Xeon server that runs Plex Media Server 24/7 (with the exception of power outages) in my network/server closet, on a significant power diet. I intend to wire up Ethernet wall plates running to a rackmount patch panel, now that I own my own home, and mount the access point on the ceiling, running the cord through the attic and down to the closet. There are rack mount kits for this, I believe, as well as the small usg. They’re basically plastic pieces that’ll bolt to a rackmount at each end, with a space cut out for the device. Until that happens, the closet is pretty much a mess, but I have included a picture anyway. I have barely scratched the surface of the available features. If you aren’t tech savvy and/or extremely patient, I would consider possibly going with a different company. However, there is a plethora of information out there on forums, and there is even an option for live chat help in the unifi controller. I’ve never used the live chat, so I can’t give an opinion one way or another regarding its usefulness. It’s so handy to be able to monitor bandwidth usage in real time. If there’s buffering reported on a remote plex stream, I can immediately see if I’m nearing my upload speed cap or not. I do wish that I knew ahead of time that this switch, as mentioned in a different review, that this switch only has one poe port, when the 60w (I believe it’s called) version has poe on all ports. Had I have known, I would have gotten the one that runs on wall power, with more poe ports. This one can run on power from a poe port from another switch, but that is not a feature I particularly need. When I add Ubiquiti cameras and another AP, I could use those extra poe ports. Other than that, I have no complaints, and the unifi gear allows me to get the entire 150/20 connection that I pay a substantial amount for monthly.there is no isp competition in my area.

I purchased this switch even though I didn't really need it. I had a perfectly fine switch, but I recently switched to Ubiquiti APs and their USG firewall device so I figured that this switch would be a nice compliment to the rest of the Unifi system. I installed the Unifi controller software on a Raspberry Pi and it found and configured this switch as easily as it did the APs and security gateway. It reports the devices that are attached to each port and have a ton of configuration options that I won't even be using. I just love having everything integrated in the excellent Unifi software. I also like the PoE powering options. Another great piece of hardware from Ubiquiti.

I picked up a couple of these to integrate into the rest of my Ubiquiti Unifi home network. I've got a couple media cabinets where it just wasn't feasible to pull 6+ lines... So I threw these in. Sure, there's only the one Gb uplink so I'm theoretically losing bandwidth... But the odds of any of this equipment saturating a Gb link - much less multiple Gb links at once - are pretty slim. The US-8 switch ships with a big, bulky power adapter that seems like overkill for such a small switch... But I'm not using it. I'm using PoE to power these switches, and it works great. No need to supply power for these switches. No extra outlets or surge strips. Setup is very easy. They're configured to pass traffic right out of the box, so they're functional even if you don't do any configuration. But configuring them is also easy... Just log into your Unifi controller, adopt them, and you're ready to go. I don't know that I'd recommend a US-8 for a non-Unifi installation... Just because I think you lose a lot of the functionality you're paying for. But, otherwise, it's a fantastic product.

I had a spot where I had to run a power cord up the wall to feed a switch and a wireless AP that I tucked up near the ceiling. I had several network cables that converged into a switch in/near my drop-ceiling and it was a bit ugly. Ubiquiti chat was less supportive than their user forums but their quality is good so it all worked out. I was hesitant to buy this until I could confirm it would power my UAP-AC-Pro using only the POE input. Support said no, but after finding some users doing what I wanted to do I found that the requirement was you just needed to make sure the input was POE+ (802.3 at not just af). After making sure I had POE+ feeding this unit (US-8-150W), I simply had to go into the config and turn POE on for the output port and it fired the AP right up. I was able to also connect the other two lines that fed computers into this, eliminating the old switch with its power brick and the POE injector power cable I was using for the AP.

Ubiquiti products are just on another level entirely. After installing this product, along with one of their PoE switches to power it, I replaced all the networking equipment in my house with Ubiquiti products. They are that good. It is silly to use anything else. A few things to be aware of. Unifi is a product line of Ubiquiti. Products in the Unifi line all use the same controller software and can be seen by the software. But products that are not in the Unifi line, such as the ER Lite router, will not be seen by the controller software. So make sure you buy products from the same product family, which is probably Unifi unless you are a global corporation. Why are Ubiquiti products so much better than consumer grade products? Because they can handle more than 100 Mbps connections, which are becoming more common now, because they can be managed, configured, and upgraded via controller software, because you can see the Wifi coverage in your house, because the Wifi access points coordinate with each other to hand off client connections. It is like being reborn. Say goodbye to network problems.

Was a real pain to set up and get POE working. The instructions don’t match how the setup menu works after update and it’s definitely not intuitive. Was disappointed to see only one port was POE. But that’s my fault for not researching further. Definitely a PITA to setup, but like all ubiq products you never have to mess with it again once it’s up and running.

Amazing pro-sumer and enterprise networking switch. I went all-in with Ubi-gear and kitted out my network setup with: - 60W Powered Switch - 12W PoE Switch (this device) - AP-PRO The 60W model powers the 12W via PoE in and also functions as the trunk line. The 12W model powers devices in the office. Two PoE ports remain on the 60W model that can be used to power more 12W switches and/or other access points. Wonderful gear and the controller software is only getting better everyday. I run the controller software on an on-premise server. However, the Cloud-Key device is a tempting offer for $75 and it could be powered off of a PoE port. The options are endless! If you want a high-end single point of view to manage all of your networking equipment, look no further. I use a pfSense router so any options in the controller that require a USG are greyed out. This does NOT impact switch performance at all. 10/10 recommend if you are technically inclined. The setup process is not consumer friendly.

I decided to review this switch (US-8) to hopefully provide some helpful information that I didn't immediately see before I purchased a handful of these. First, this switch is designed to be used in a managed environment via the UniFi Controller software. It is NOT designed to be a standalone switch that you directly manage (see the Ubiquiti Edge Switches for that). Second, there is this switch (US-8) and the US-8-60W. The US-8 is a PoE-powered switch with one PoE pass through port. In other words, this switch can be powered by INPUT via PoE and it can OUTPUT PoE power to one other port. The US-8-60W is a more traditional switch that requires wall power and has 4 ports that can OUTPUT PoE power. Since this is a PoE-powered switch -- if you have a "core" switch that provides PoE, you can power this little US-8 via PoE via the core and without a wall adapter. Why would you want this feature? I have my core switch on a large UPS that can power it for hours. By using PoE-powered edge switches, those edge switches stay powered in a power failure without having to put a UPS at each one. Also, I have some places where I don't have wall power handy. That said, the US-8 comes with a regular wall transformer that can power the switch instead of input PoE. I did some testing and the US-8 unfortunately will NOT hot-swap between PoE power and wall power. So if your US-8 first powered up with the wall adapter but also has PoE input power, and you unplug the wall adapter, the switch has to reset itself (and drop connectivity) to transition to using the PoE input power. This US-8 also has a pass-thru PoE (output) port on #8. Port 8 has PoE output turned OFF by default. So, to summarize the PoE situation, this switch can accept PoE INPUT on Port #1 to power the US-8 and can be configured to OUTPUT PoE on port #8. I found this very useful where I had only one ethernet drop to an area for a PoE cam and wanted to add a Smart TV via ethernet without losing the PoE cam. All 8 ports are gigabit and I get expected throughput via the US-8. I'm very pleased and have deployed a bunch of these in my home/home-office.

I'm already running a small Unifi network of routers/switches and AP's but needed to expand. This little 8 port switch was used to branch off the existing network to my new Recroom and Rental suite. It was too far and intrusive to run new cables from my existing switch so instead I just ran 7 cables down through a sill plate in the wall and used the 8 port Unifi to spilt the connection from an existing port. There are a mix of devices connected so I used the switches Vlan capabilities to separate the IOT devices from the rental suite and from my existing private network. All up and running in less than an hour. Could've used a $20 unmanaged switch but wouldn't have been able to set up separate Vlans. The only snag I ran into was the switch was delivered without a power supply. Called their support line and 30 minutes later, a Unifi 48V POE injector was being shipped to me @ no extra charge. Word of warning tho, their support is not "techie". They 1st offered to send me a 24V POE injector because that was what their search came up with. She spent another 10 minutes and couldn't find anything suitable. I ended up having to search Amazon.ca and tell them exactly which item I needed. Not complaining, I got what I needed without much extra effort at all.

I've seen a few negative reviews where people confuse the US-8 with the US-8-60W. Or some people may not understand PoE pass-through (to the 8th port) only works if the switch is powered by an upstream PoE device (and not powered from the 12v adapter which is also included). This little switch works fantastic, please read up prior to purchase to ensure the product is fit for your environment. It works as intended, I own this as well as a US-8-60W and a few other Ubiquiti devices and can highly recommend. For those whom are new to Ubiquiti there may be a small learning curve especially if self hosting with their Network Application.

This is high grade switch, the only issue is the lack of web interface on the switch. it has to be part of a network controlled by the controller from the maker. It is fast, was easy to provision on the network. it will let you know what is on each ports. there are more settings then you can dream about. Just put it on the network ... if it is any thing like the EdgeRouters or the Unifi-ap this should be solid stuff !

Only 1 POE pass through out, but the device is POE it's self. Works great and joins in with my unifi kit but kinda hoped for more POE out.

A nice little Ubiquiti managed switch, easy to install and managed by Unifi. Only 1 x POE port, but otherwise great product!
