As others have suggested, the only real challenge was installing the lock assembly. I used a file to create a little additional room because I was unsure about how much force I should use to insert the assembly. Other than that, everything fit just fine. If you have an existing mailbox post, this will all be a breeze. I didn't, so that is where I spent most of my energy, but I was going to have to do that anyway. As for the appearance, from a distance I'm not sure my neighbors realized this was plastic. Up close, it's pretty obvious. But it still looks good, and feels way more solid that just a box on a post. The only change I made from the standard installation was the house numbers. Do you think it is necessary to go with the expert setup** A: The setup was very easy. You are suppose to dig a hole and sink a post into the ground which may or may not be easy for you. It requires only basic tools. We actually put sand in the bottom interior of ours to help secure it because we have to occasionally move ours for snow removal purposes. I really don't think you would need expert set up. **Q: can I use free standing without post?** A: Hi Sandra, I do not think it is possible to obtain Mailbox suitable stability without a post, as the 4"x4" treated Post anchors the mailbox frame works with 3 strong lag screws to the post. My Wife and I installed the mailbox with post per instructions 24 inches in the ground with post hole digger. Then used concrete around the post and installed the mailbox frame works with 3 strong lag screws to the post. **Q: Can this mailbox stand alone on a porch without having to anchor it to something? Could I just put a bag of something heavy inside it?** A: Wow. Hadn't thought of that. You could put a bag of something in the bottom. It is an enclosed cavity with 4 sides. But someone could just take it. Heavy I think would only prevent wind damage. If you just need the storage not security, I don't see why not. Not sure it would be postal approved. So just for the can I part. Sure. Should I ? Maybe not. I will say this is my third one. I've moved away from the other 2. One was even hit by a teenage driver! I love it. Refuse to move without being promised a new one! Still looks good.
