It shows zero signs of wear and tear and makes consistently great coffee every time. My own method is simple: Boil 350ml of water. Put a size 4 filter paper in the dripper and use 50 ml of the water to moisten the paper. Drain this through into my cup, then stand the dripper on the worktop and pour the remaining 300ml of water into it. (Discard the 50ml from your cup). Add around 18gm of coffee of choice and lightly mix it so all of it is soaking in the flavour. Wait 3 mins and then put the dripper back onto the cup. Muse on life as the water filters through. Remove the dripper and enjoy. I understand that the reason for putting the water in first is that it speeds up the flow rate. If you put the coffee in first, it clogs up in the centre of the filter and slows it down. PROS: Cheap device producing clear, clean, non-bitter coffee from any bean, every time. Is this step necessary?** A: Some people do it, some people don't. I do not think a "paper taste" is something I've ever noticed when skipping the step, but aside from rinsing out any potentially-lingering paper flavor and sealing the filter to the sides of the dripper, this step also preheats the dripper, which should slightly reduce heat loss during the dwell stage. However, I find I prefer using a finer grind and a shorter dwell time (no more than 2:45 from bloom to completion of draw-down), so I honestly don't think heat loss is a big concern the way I use the CCD. That said, it's not really much effort to perform this step, it takes all of 10 seconds and wastes all of a 1/2-cup of water; I always do it, even if not strictly necessary, on the off-chance that it does offer a subtle benefit. **Q: Can this be used with a small gold permanent filter?** A: Yes, I use the Blue Brew filter (although it is gold and not blue!) It fits in the plastic cone and does not interfere with the release mechanism. However I notice that, due to the different expansion rates between the plastic cone and the metal filter, the filter becomes very firmly stuck in the plastic cone after use. It comes out by turning the dripper upside down and giving it a sharp rap on the counter, but it is a minor nuisance. **Q: How do you properly clean this product... anyone tried bleach?** A: Do not use bleach. If it is stained use baking soda in hot water and let it soak. But if you rinse it every time and doa deep clean with baking soda or baking powder it won't stain and coffee oils won’t collect on it. **Q: how big is the large and how big is the small** A: I have a large. I get a 500ml of coffee per pour-over. Two loads of water yields a liter of coffee. I use 3-4 measures of coffee grounds for a liter. A liter requires 2 pour-overs.
