He is only able to follow the counting in this book when the objects being counted are separate and unique. There is a page with trees that is difficult to differentiate where one stops and the other begins, and there is a page with snakes that are intertwined. As my grandson grows the difficulty of this book will decrease as his critical thinking skills increase. As another reviewer mentioned each item to be counted starts with the same letter as the number to be counted; such as thirteen thorns, one owl, or six snakes. There is a page at the end to send you back into the book looking for other objects in the illustrations. This is one of those books that an adult will not mind reading over and over.
