Usually, people refer to them as "9s, 10s, 11s and sometimes 12s." That refers to the high E string (the smallest one) at 0.009mm thick, 0.10mm thick, 0.11mm etc... If you're a beginner, 9s will be the easiest to play, but you may be better off using 10s right from the start so you can build up some strength. But you don't want playing to be uncomfortable.
