There was an improvement within an hour or so, but it took several applications on the problem areas over several days till the smell was gone. The product has a pleasant but not overly perfumey odour, which we like because one person in our family is susceptible to fragrance-triggered headaches. We got the impression that the product eliminated rather than just covered the bad smell. I highly recommend this product. We liked the results so much, we bought another gallon to use up at the cottage, where a couple of couches have a musty smell that we hope will respond well. One recommendation - if you're spraying a large area, as we had to do initially, or are making repeated applications, you'll find that your hand gets really tired working the sprayer for extended periods. We had to keep trading on and off with different people doing the spraying.
