Wanted a "floating" tap holder for power tapping on the lathe, and didn't want to spend a full day in the shop (well, I get half a day at a time max in my shop) making my own solution. I was searching desertcart for a manual tap driver that I could modify (remove cross bar and mill 3 flats on the shaft to securely hold in a drill chuck) when I came across these and realized they would work perfectly for my needs. I just use a 3/8" square drive impact driver adapter mounted in a keyless drill chuck in the tailstock. Works great. The non-rigid connection to that adapter allows the angle and position to adjust slightly which compensates for the slight sag that comes with a tailstock that is left loose so the tap pulls the tailstock toward the chuck. Tap follows the properly sized pilot hole. Probably wouldn't work well on very deep tapped holes (rigid setup for perfect eccentricity would be ideal), but I'm typically only tapping a max depth of 2x the tap diameter. I've used this approach dozens of times now and I love it. Wish I had found it sooner. Added benefit: I can also use them with a ratchet for bench work with larger taps, as designed. MANY THANKS....from N.M.** A: Both are 3/8" square drive. One is #6 to 1/4" and the other is 1/4" to 1/2". So min. is #6 and max. is 1/2". **Q: Will it hold my smallest taps, M6, M5, 10-24, etc.?** A: Yep. The smallest tap I have is 6-32, and it could actually grip something even smaller. **Q: Will this work with a impact?** A: These are not nearly beefy enough for impact duty and could not be used as tap adapters anyway as the impacts would almost certainly shatter the hardened tap. These are excellent adapters when used with a 3/8" ratchet wrench as intended. **Q: What does this do** A: Yes, these are for holding thread tapping tools. If you want to make a threaded hole for a screw in a piece of metal like steel, aluminum, copper or brass you will need a thread tap. A regular tap wrench will work fine for a few holes but one would get hand fatigue after that. These tap holders fit on the 3/8" male drives of socket wrenches and 1/4" hex drill adapters. Be careful though because a tap wrench does give a feel as to the strength limit of the tap whereas with the added weight and leverage of a wrench or a drill this sensitivity is lost. It would be easy then to break a tap.
