We have selected Danish Oil as our preferred type of oil for the kit as we believe it is the easiest to use and one of the hardest wearing wood oils available. It will soak into the wood and enhance the natural beauty of the timber and bring out the grain and colour in the wood. The kit can be used on any type of wood (oak, beech, walnut etc) and can be used on wood made into any item (furniture, worktops, doors etc). Cleaning Before applying the Danish Oil, clean the wood using the Wood Cleaner and coarse sanding pad. This cleaning action will remove old oil, any silicone polishes, dirt, grease, and grime from the wood. Step 2. Sanding As the original oil is removed/reduced, the wood will begin to appear a lighter colour. You should then sand the surface using a fine sanding pad; this will help make the wood feel smooth. Step 3. Oiling Apply the Danish Oil liberally with a Foam Brush and wipe onto the surface following the direction of the grain. Leave to penetrate for two to three minutes and wipe away any excess oil with the Lint Free Cloth. Leave to dry for four to six hours. Step 4. Finishing Using a finishing pad, lightly sand the surface to smooth and remove any imperfections in the finish. Apply two more coats, leaving the full four to six hours drying time between. Once dry, go over the surface one last time with finishing pad for a lovely, smooth surface. Having read useage tips and reviews of linseed, tung and Danish oil I opted for this. It's easily applied with a soft lint free cloth and soaks in To bare wood easily. I. Applied 3 coats over 48 hours and the finish is really excellent. Re coating took a couple of minutes so it's not difficult, although you do need somewhere out of the way and relatively dust free to leave it to cure I find stripped vintage oak is quite yellow tinged with grey, and I prefer it to the dark treacle glazes often used on utility furniture in the 1930s and 40's especially. Danish oil does colour your project.. The lamp is now a deep reddish brown which may not suit those like me who prefer light oak, but due to mismatched wood I needed some colour anyway. The, lamp looks really good.. The colour is rich and deep and looks very natural not at all like a surface applied stain. Despite being oil based the product dries with a dry non sticky sheen when cured. The instructions reccomend applying An Annual Refresher coat to maintain protection otherwise it is maintenance free. If the colour is what you are after I would highly recommend this oil as an aesthetic as well As practical finish to bare new or restored wooden items. Although there is no evident top coat as you get with varnishes, the wood feels more resilient and protected to the touch.. And it enhances graining and texture without detracting.
