There's rarely a dull moment when Chika Ito and her friends get together: whether they're telling ghost stories, playing games, or taking trips to the beach and park, every day brings a new adventure. Of course, not everyone appreciates the constant presence of a pack of 12 year olds, and Chika's big sister Nobue might sometimes wish that Chika's friends weren't always underfoot. Especially troublemaking Miu, whose "help" with Nobue's job hunt is definitely not appreciated! Then again, Miu can cause problems just about anywhere, even when she hits her head and thinks she's in Heaven! And when the girls make a trip to the public baths, does anyone think they'll make a clean escape and scrub away every single piece of evidence? Either way, the fun's sure to continue as the whole gang reunites in the complete OVA collection of STRAWBERRY MARSHMALLOW! Review: Cute - Cute Review: Came on time - Perfect story for my nice

like they regressed in age somehow
This disc is 5 direct-to-video episodes continuing the extremely low-key daily adventures of the 5 girls from the 2005 STRAWBERRY MARSHMALLOW (Ichigo Mashimaro) TV series with the first three episodes being the ICHIGO MASHIMARO Original Video Animation series from 2007 and the final two being the ICHIGO MASHIMARO ENCORE series from 2009, with a little bit of a jarring shift in terms of character designs. The first three episodes have the girls look essentially the same as how they looked in the TV series, though Chika and Miu look subtly a little older (even though they still seem to be in elementary school despite having been in grade 6 in the TV show which covered the "previous year" of their lives.... I guess it's a "floating timeline" where nobody ever changes grades), but the ENCORE episodes make every character look more chibi than they how they looked in the TV series, like they regressed in age somehow. Most of the episodes here (like the TV show) are only loosely-collected vignettes based on short manga chapters although episode 3 is a complete (and mostly anime original) story about the girls going on a road trip to a seaside guesthouse on the Izu peninsula and then energetic idiot Miu hits her head doing a backwards flip and takes a journey into the Japanese afterlife in a more surreal segment that's the first half of the first episode of ICHIGO MASHIMARO ENCORE (the 4th episode on the disc overall). If you like slice-of-life anime comedies about cute girls doing cute things with just a bit of a sarcastic sense of humour, STRAWBERRY MARSHMALLOW is one of the essential shows to watch.
