## Description

A work of tremendous influence that has inspired writers from his ancient Greek contemporaries to modernist writers such as T.S. Eliot, Homer's epic poem The Iliad is translated by Robert Fagles with an introduction and notes by Bernard Knox in Penguin Classics. One of the foremost achievements in Western literature, Homer's Iliad tells the story of the darkest episode in the Trojan War. At its centre is Achilles, the greatest warrior-champion of the Greeks, and his refusal to fight after being humiliated by his leader Agamemnon. But when the Trojan Hector kills Achilles' close friend Patroclus, Achilles storms back into battle to take revenge - although knowing this will ensure his own early death. Interwoven with this tragic sequence of events are powerfully moving descriptions of the ebb and flow of battle, of the domestic world inside Troy's besieged city of Ilium, and of the conflicts between the Gods on Olympus as they argue over the fate of mortals. Seven Greek cities claim the honour of being the birthplace of Homer (c. 8th-7th century BC), the poet to whom the composition of the Iliad and Odyssey are attributed. The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Western literature, but the identity - or even the existence - of Homer himself is a complete mystery, with no reliable biographical information having survived. If you enjoyed The Iliad , you might like The Odyssey , also available in Penguin Classics. 'An astonishing performance' Peter Levi 'Plain and direct, noble, above all rapid ... leading the reader forward with an irresistible flow. [Fagles'] version is imbued with humanity' Oliver Taplin, The New York Times Book Review 'Robert Fagles has given us an Iliad to read aloud: eloquent, rhythmical, and full of power' Jasper Griffin, Oxford University

Review: Excellent translation, quality paperback (note the deckled edges!) - Fellow customers: please note that the "jagged" deckled edges are intentional, not a defect! That info is tucked away toward the bottom of the product description, so that came as a surprise to me. I don't prefer deckled edges, but they're not a dealbreaker for me, and the quality of the paper itself actually feels very nice—better than most of the books I own. As usual, desertcart's handling was less gentle than ideal, and the cover edges got a little dinged up in transit. No significant damages, though. Now with that out of the way: this is my first time reading The Iliad (because I guess I've been living under a rock for all these years) and I am stunned by how truly excellent it is. For some background, I mainly read epic fantasy, but lately I have found a lot of my more recent reads to be lackluster—so I decided to go back to the original tales of gods, fantastical feats, thematic depth, and cultural significance. I started with Stephen Mitchell's translation since it was the only version available from my library, but it felt stilted and omitted a whole chunk of the original epic, so I switched to this translation (as per the Internet's as well as my husband's recommendation). Fagles' translation reads beautifully and I can't recommend it highly enough. The language is contemporary enough to be accessible and rich enough to maintain its sense of grandeur and awe. The Iliad is a thrilling, tragic, and at times darkly humorous cautionary tale of the cost of war and man's hubris. The reader feels the weight of the violence and the carelessness of men and gods; the ugly sides of the war and social dynamics aren't sugarcoated or watered down. It sits with you in a way that reminds you that these themes from millennia ago are still relevant today. Absolutely excellent, highly recommended.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great translation, timeless story
*by A***E on 24 July 2025*

The translation was easy to read, but it's still a book that needs to be read slowly to fully understand. Amazing to read a story that was already old for the ancient Greeks, and has so influenced the world.
