The Mongols erupted out of Central Asia in 1206 and soon controlled an empire stretching from Poland to Korea; although remembered as a destructive force, they united a great part of the world under one rule, and their combined arms and mobile tactics have had considerable influence on subsequent military thinkers.Jeremia Curtin, born 1835, was an American translator and folklorist. He died in 1906. Review: Excellent - Very good Review: Interesting read - I find history fascinating. This book is a good read while traveling on a train/plain. I can now see how George Martin was inspired by mongols when developing his dothraki culture

Doesn't do what it says on the tin
A rather poor Victorian history, which falls into the trap of a number of popular Victorian historians of including a lot of dialogue in which it translates 13th century Mongolian into cod 16th century (rather than 19th century) English, with lots of "thous, thees and yes" sometimes confusing them, and using ye as a singular and thou as a plural. It promises in its foreword to take the story on to Tamerlane and the Moguls; it doesn't, and it concentrates on the activities of the early mongols in the middle east and central Asia, with little about Batu Khan and the Khanate of the Golden Horde, very little about Kublai Khan and China.

Gave me a headache
If you are already reasonably versed in the history of this culture, then you might enjoy this book. I found it really hard work, it assumes the reader has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the geography ancient Asia and its key characters. Tried really hard but couldn't finish this book

Far too convoluted
I have read plenty of history books written many years ago but this is very poorly structured. Felt like I was reading a King James bible with all its thees and thous....... gave up after the third chapter. I'll stick with Conn Igguldon.

Dated
I didn’t like this, it seemed very dated. I’m sure it’s time it was great and for academic research it’s fine but as a casual reader of history it wasn’t for me

rare instance of China's loss being Russian gain
Neal Stephenson has a series of fiction on this area, very well written. Starostin has a big comparative dictionary and if veiled fiction interests, there is the fabulous incomplete and waiting series by Mark Z. Danielewski

Facts, facts and more facts.....
I was only able to get through 40% of this book. It may be suitable for a student whose sole aim was to obtain basic facts - but, to me, it was too boring to hold my interest. It was written in a manner describing the facts without any elaboration. I became confused when a multitude of historical figures and events were described on the same page. Unfamiliar and foreign subject names and place names caused my head to be in a whirl. Undoubtedly the book contained heaps of factual data but it was written in a manner so not to maintain my interest or attention.

The Mongols
Excellent book in shedding the history of Genghis Kan and his Mongols and the role they played in Russia. Anybody interested in Russian history will find this book of interest. Book arrived on time and in perfect condition. Good seller. Thanks
