The trick is to use the thinnest coating you can. Wash off with ant microbial soap - never use Dial as it's been known to sting, the detergents are too harsh. Then simply apply again 2-3 times a day. We tried Desitin for a while (which is a white mess) before going to A&D (which is almost exactly like plain petroleum jelly, maybe a hair thinner) and will never look back. This stuff is phenomenal; it rubs in/gets absorbed easily and if you put it on in the morning and before bed (and maybe after any poops) the baby will be fine... not so much as red irritation. The smell is unique; I don't notice it anymore, but when I first opened a bottle my childhood came flooding back to me. Apparently my mom used to use this all the time too when I asked her about it. Anyway, unless the smell is a show-stopper for you, it's amazing. And I really do mean the smell is unique -- it's not horrible or wondering, it just smells... a little hospital-ly if that is even a valid way to categorize a smell. Regardless, it works amazingly.
