These are absolutely gorgeous, and a real pleasure to use. My primary watercolour set is 52 half pans. I built the set up over time, buying each one individually, across a variety of brands, to get the exact colours I wanted. One of those was 'grahite', and I was enthralled with the beauty of it when applied to paper. So when I saw this set of coloured graphite, I couldn't resist, and they didn't disappoint. Like all watercolors, they give a beautiful range from deep colour to light wash. The colours are muted, but certainly not washed out. I would class them as 'earth tones', and they would be stunning in landscape paintings. The shimmer is quite subtle, making them quite suitable to use along with standard watercolors, as they won't overpower wherever they are applied. There will just be a subtle shimmer when the light hits the painting, or it is viewed from side on. Some people have complained about getting two of the same colour, but this could very well be an issue with colour perception. The Grey Green and the Graphite Grey are very close, but the Grey Green does definitely have more of a green tint. The same goes for the Slate Green when comparing to the Ocean Blue, and the Steel Blue, but again there is a definite green tint to the Slate Green. I have also seen complaints about the colours not matching the printed colour card, and all I can say to that is "well, duh!". Of course it doesn't match. I have yet to ever see a printed colour card match any watercolors, especially when it comes to the more subtle or complex colours, and particularly when it is printed on plastic. Printing just can't duplicate that. That's why every artist knows... always swatch your mediums. It's the very first thing you do when you get a new one, or a new colour. The plastic colour card does make a fabulous bookmark though, for those who still read actual printed books. Anyway, I can highly recommend this set, and it is a welcome addition to my watercolour pallette.

I've got the xl coloured graphite blocks. I decided to try these graphitints paints as they're similar when used as a paint meduim. I also bought the derwent tint & shade mixed media set to see what they're like as well. These are very different from any water colour paints. Very granulated with a slightly shiney affect you get with graphite. The range of colours is nicely muted and also lend themselves well to a monotone look. They're meant to be eraserable yet its more a case of reduced than really erased. Nice small box for use with a sketch book when out and about. They are well worth playing with. As for the sister Dewert tint and shade mixed media set they're also nice but in a different sort of way. They to me lend themselves more to almost colouring a pen and ink drawing in a bolder sort of way or creating a background wash with the tinted charcoal they offer.

I have been wanting to try these pans for awhile and the price dropped so I pulled the trigger. Overall, they are wonderful. They behave differently than watercolor and are more opaque, like gouache. The graphite settles into the paper, which is more noticeable with cold press than with smooth sketchbook paper and in the light the flecks of graphite add a subtle shimmer. I used them with a light application on a drawing in my Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchbook and more heavily on 100% cotton cold press watercolor block. In both instances they were lovely to work with and allowed focus on tone without the "distraction" of a huge range of colors. The muted colors are lovely for rendering sea birds. One reviewer commented that the green grey was too similar to the other colors, but I found a significant distinction between that shade and the other colors in the palette while painting and mixing with it. I was able to get the darkest tones with the steel blue straight out of the pan, but the range of colors when mixing was impressive. I think these are a great addition to pencil and look forward to sketching with them. Well worth the investment.
