I hold an MA in history, but it had been years since I really studied ancient history, and this book helped me remember what I had not studied or read about since high school. If you specialize in another area of social studies such as economics or sociology, you might want to pick up a Western Civ history book and a U.S. History book. The written text itself is succinct and clear. I would read individual sections and take the the short succeeding practice exams. Another flaw is the short practice exams that follow each chapter of the book, include the answers, so if you want to see how much knowledge you have, you need to cover up the answers. The text includes a couple of factual errors as well. The free Flashcards are useless, and seem to be more generic terms than anything designed for the MTEL. The tests are a useful study tool. Massachusetts provides one practice exam on their website, this book provides two more.
