Are these chisels good for cut mortises ?

Yes. They are terrific for that purpose. Our woodworking chisel set made of black walnut hardwood and CRV can easily cut mortises, shave rough surfaces, chop out corners and scrape off glue.

Are these appropriate for Japanese Joinery?

I don’t do Japanese joinery, but I use these chisels everyday, they take an edge really well and stay sharp good chisels for the money l polished mine and put a good edge on them

Are these chisels tang or socket?

The chisel handles are attached via a tang. There is a retaining ring at both the top and base of the wood handle to prevent the handle from splitting when driven with a mallet. I won't use heavy blows to drive these chisels.
