This Grease Gun is made to be individually loaded from the top (it unscrews), and there are NO springs inside the big tube to force the grease up and out. This is a very old, and very good design dating back (at least) to the 1920's and the plunger works by creating a vacuum of pulling the grease up from the tube, while pushing it into the zerc fitting. I got it use on a few old 1920 era motorcycles and found it would work on more modern design zerc fittings. To fill it, you need to unscrew the top, force the metal follower down to the bottom of the tube, and fill the grease from a tub. I only use Moly based grease and need a tongue depressor to fill the tube. There are a few explanation videos on u-tube. Bottom line - it works, it is much cheaper to operate than a 'modern cartridge type' and it will work on any size zerc. For the money you can't go wrong. **Q: Anyone know the correct fitting to allow standard grease gun fitting to be adapted to this mini grease gun?** A: You can, this and the other grease guns like this are all copies of the original lincoln lubrigun from the 1920-1950's. I own an original one from the 1950's and it came with a zerk adapter in addition to the needle. These came in tool kits packaged with most new tractors back in the day. **Q: Will it work on a chainsaw?** A: Yes it will! . I bought for my chainsaw and it worked so well I ordered a second. Both work great and I keep one in each case.
