Review: I do monthly stream water quality monitoring using a very expensive YSI DSS Pro probe system. A county agency maintains and calibrates it. But in the winter I like to do more frequent monitoring of conductivity so I can track excessive use of road salt. I have been using an EC100, but needed a second for a friend. The EC150 adds total dissolved solids to basic conductivity. I do not use TDS but the EC150 tends to be easier to find on desertcart, and I just leave it set on conductivity. There are cheaper conductivity meters, around $10. They are pure junk. These Extech ECs have proper temperature compensation and are very linear. Their readings match those of the expensive YSI probe within a couple of microSiemens, and they hold calibration quite well (as long as the batteries are good). I check calibration each time I take them out, using 1000 microSiemen calibration fluid. The only time I've had bad readings was when the EC100's batteries were weak. So if you know the water is in the range of 35ppt, you can't make direct measurements. But, you could dilute the sample (say 10x) in the field using bottled water (has a salinity <<< sample) or DI water and that would put you at 3.5g/L roughly. You should be able to detect fluctuations at 0.1ppt on the diluted water which translates into detecting 1ppt fluctuations in the water. **Q: is the Exstick EC500 come with calibration certificate ?** A: No, it does not, but we can get you a Certificate of Conformance from Extech, when you purchase this product from our Amazon Store. **Q: how does it give two readings** A: Salinity in ppm Conductivity. And total dissolved solids. I really like this meter. Part of this is to place the probe in DI water. The device will not calibrate to the solution as the device is more than 30% off the ppt calculation for saltwater in the High range over 10 ppt. Both my Refrator and Hygrometer return the correct values. For saltwater in the lower range 1-10, the probe seems to function. This device that I recieved will not work for a salt solution in the Hight over 10 ppt range, and therefor is of no use in a Saltwater Tank.
