Apparently tryptophan is one of the chemicals that create serotonin. It's an essential amino acid, so I must not be getting enough from my meals (though that's a whole different topic). I've also been taking 5-HTP to help me as well. I can't be positive that this is helping me but it seems to be. I feel comfortable saying that I do feel better after taking it. It's not a huge change in my mentality but I do feel as if I'm a little happier. I have been using it alone and with other 5-htp products, and that overall pleasantness is apparent in both cases. I am able to focus better and I'm waking up much less often at night. I've noticed over the last couple weeks that my moodiness in the morning has definitely gone down. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning my head feels sort of cloudy, but after taking Tryptophan before bed, I've realized no matter what time I end up waking up, that cloudiness isn't as present. I have to say I do take this in conjunction with St. Johns Wort so I can't tell what percentage of the effect I'm feeling is related to either that or this supplement. Also I haven't really found a difference with how easy/quickly it is for me to fall asleep while taking this. Overall I think it's a great supplement to any diet, and the dosing/quantity of this product is superior to the competition.
