Oldboy [4K Ultra-HD] [Blu-ray]

This movie is great. An action packed thriller that is sure to please most people who would like to see a classic from another country. Highly recommend.

This film is absolutely spectacular! I have to say i became enthralled by japanese/chinese/korean films because of this film. Min-sik Choi (oh dae su) plays a great leading role as a manic and desperate man locked up with no reason given. Oh dae su looks great in his black suit and his shade (which i think only he could pull off!) The plot of the film is simple, just read the tag line "15 years of imprisonment, five days of vengeance". It is very stylised and the music goes perfectly with some of the scenes! What i love about this film is the fact that it sticks true to the character. He has been locked up for 15 years so you do not expect him to have attained super human martial arts skills! and this is exactly what happens! his fighting technic is quite thuggish, brutal and rough! his desperation of trying to solve the mystery of the film can be seen in his acting as well as his fighting technic! The part with the tooth brush! quite genuis! as you would not expect him to use that as a weapon! The fight scene in the corridor is quite reminiscent of the street fighter games and the scene with the hammer............. well i wont spoil it but you have to have a strong stomach to watch what he does with! if you dont even cringe at what he does YOUR NOT HUMAN. In parts it is darkly humourous (if you appreciate that kind of humour) and you cant help but laugh at the manic character and his insane attitude! all in all... a great film with a simple plot, great cast and teriffic fighting scenes The ending of the film is quite horrific i have to say!(what oh dae su finds out) I really did not expect that and the punishment that oh dae su recieved seems quite excessive of the crime he commited! The ending is also great as well as it leaves the viewer to make their own decision on what has happened. If you havent seen it yet! WATCH IT! Your truely missing OUT! (it is subtitled)

For those who enjoy adult films with adult themes this is a film I could not recommend highly enough. Some will say it's too disturbing which is fair to say as it can be a bridge too far for people not used to films containing such themes. Some say it's slow and it does deal with character building and information seeking as much as, if not more than, the action scenes, which is not a criticism, I think it's perfect the way it is and I'm a fan of the "slow film" as they allow more tension to be built in my opinion and this doesn't just do it well, it masters it and sets the bar ever so highly for other films wanting to implement a twist at the end. The violence while some parts graphical isn't as graphical as you may expect, a lot of it is done with clever camera use and editing to make you see it mentally rather than visually. It's beautifully shot, I love the use of camera, very stylishly presented. The soundtrack compliments the film so well, I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best I've heard in a film before, the contrast of emotion in the different themes is really appreciated. This is not a film you'd want to see with a family member let me tell you, it's a film you'd probably want to see with a friend, or if your girlfriend/boyfriend didn't mind the nature of the film, but probably a friend/alone. It's a very thought-provoking movie and there are a references throughout that you capture on a second viewing you most definitely won't on the first. A lot of people 'got it' but were confused by a lot of different elements so I would recommend repeat viewings (Don't worry, the film still holds up for repeat viewings, even when you know the end twist.) Overall I give this movie 5 out of 5, and I rarely give films such high ratings, but this left me completely stunned in a good way. I had so much to think through after the credits rolled, I wanted to watch it again straight after, which again is rare. The film has flaws like any film does, but they are so minor when compared to the whole product they are virtually unrecognisable. It may be a modern masterpiece and one of the few films I've seen since 2000 that left me shaking my head in appreciation, such is the quality of this movie.

Really brilliant film. Leans heavily towards a comic-book tone at times, but apparently, the story is based on a Japanese manga (black and white comic). I have to confess the casting choice to have one of the characters be played by an actor of way too young an age does make the plot really quite confusing for me, I spent too much time thinking that character must be the son of another character as they'd have been a child during the events they're supposed to play a part in. There's also a little reliance on things like hypnosis to make some of the plot points make sense, and as someone who really doesn't believe in that kind of thing it left bits of the film feeling a little far fetched. But while I might be the kind of stickler who gets hung up on those sorts of details, I still loved the vast majority of the film. It's wild, engaging, and full of style. The Arrow release bundles in a nice set of special features including some deleting scenes and a few different commentary tracks. The picture is also sharp and colorful, though a few scenes towards the end do look a bit lower quality (like the focus was slightly off). Nothing terribly distracting though. I'd consider spending the extra money on the Vengence Trilogy though, as it appears to contain everything this release does as well as the two other movies in the trilogy. It's not too different in price, especially on sale. Had I seen it, I'd have probably gone for that version as Oldboy has left curious to try the other two movies now.

I went in not knowing anything about Oldboy beyond it being a revenge story with some good action and an interesting one-shot fight scene. Coming out the other side I really enjoyed it as one-time experience, but I can understand why people have their issues with it and I'm not sure if I'd need to watch it again. There's a lot to enjoy in the film, but only if you're interested in taking a more voyeuristic approach rather than investing in the characters or the story. The style and pacing worked well in keeping me interested in watching as everything felt almost surreal, like a fever dream more than a coherant story. The plot seems to follow that feeling as well, throwing curveballs and completely strange points to change up the story, which serve more to confuse the audience than add depth. That might put some people off, and normally I'd find it frustrating, but I genuinely didn't mind it with Oldboy. As I said it keeps with this feeling of seeing life through someone elses haze, and I enjoyed that. So, yeah, definitely give this a try. It's worth it for the one-time ride.

The story comes from a Japanese comic book of the same name, in which an ordinary family man is suddenly kidnapped and placed in a cell dressed up as a hotel room. Given no explanation for his confinement or the murder of his wife, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) spends the next 15 years alone, weaving in and out of hallucinatory states with only a television to keep him company. Old Boy is nothing short of brilliant compelling viewing, suspenseful and ultra-violent - you won't see many films like this one in a lifetime. It not for everyone - it is violent and shocking in its nature and subject matter - but we can't have Bridget Jones in every film - and we don't that either do we!!! Most negative reviews can't seem to handle the gratuitous violence, but personally feel it is necessary to express what Oh Dae-Su has been through the past 15 years. The film takes you away on a roller-coaster ride of human emotions, a brilliant plot, and sheer brilliance. The acting is absolutely superb throughout. Min-sik Choi did a great job as Oh Dae-Su and Chan-wook Park's direction was top notch. All I need to see to sum up this film really is - What a film - see it! I am so glad I went into this film not knowing it's twists (hence I won't give any of them away here) as it really is fantastic working them out as the film is progressing and I can't help but think the film would be a lesser (albeit still a great one) experience if you know what was going to happen.

Oldboy is the best film of the last decade. To understand why this film is so good you have to see it. No review can do Oldboy any justice. Oldboy plot surrounds a man who was kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years while his wife was brutally murdered. After spending 15 years in his cell he is released to find out the reason why it was done to him. It's a surreal, twisted tale of vengeance featuring brilliant direction, haunting performances and rock solid script. Oldboy is a very brutal and intelligent film that makes you think. And that's a hard thing to pull off. The violence is shocking, brutal but it fits the tone of the film. Sadly the upcoming Hollywood remake might taint the legacy of this masterpiece. The sound and picture quality is stellar. There are again no English dub which is a good thing. Foreign films should be seen in their original languages. The audio is Korean with English subtitles. There are 3 commentary tracks and a trailer. Commentary tracks are in Korean so you will have to read subtitles. If you want more extra features then you should get 2 disc edition. Oldboy is amazing and should be seen by any film fans.

i cannot begin to tell you how great this movie is, it's hard to talk about this movie without spoiling it, that's how story driven it is, so i'll keep it brief, it's not so much the story that is complex, it's the characters motivation's which is breathtaking, i'll start with the acting, choi--min sik gives one of the most exhilerating preformances i've ever seen, it's like he was born for it, everyone in this movie is there for a reason, and all of them play their part so well. the direction and cinematography...just...stunning, it's so stylish yet necsasary, there's no obnoxious camera shots, and the enviroment give's the characters depth. and finally...the writing, now, if you like characters with complexity and a story with originality, then you will adore this film, there are no plot holes, it's just perfect, don't listen to people who trash the film without reason, and "i just didn't get it" or "it's disturbing" doesn't count as a reasonable explination, you can't hate a movie for not being your typical paitronizing garbage that hollywood make, like i said earlier, you don't have to like it, but you have to respect it, so, if your tired of remakes and sequels, i highly recommend it.

„Oldboy“ ist einer dieser Filme, den man Freunden des asiatischen Kinos uneingeschränkt empfehlen kann und auch mich hat er von Anfang an überzeugt. Allein die Handlung hatte mich sofort in den Film reingezogen, in welcher der Hauptcharakter Oh Dae-su einfach entführt sowie für 15 Jahre in einem Raum ohne ein Fenster eingesperrt wird und ohne zu wissen, warum er überhaupt eingesperrt wurde. Allein ein Fernseher hilft ihm, von den Vorgängen in der Welt noch überhaupt etwas mitzubekommen. Dadurch erfährt er auch, dass seine Frau tot aufgefunden wurde und ihm dessen Tod sogar als Mord angelastet wird. Doch schließlich wird Oh Dae-su nach 15 Jahren einfach so freigelassen, ohne zu erfahren, warum er überhaupt freigelassen wird. Dies ist natürlich nicht weniger verwirrend, allerdings besitzt Oh Dae-su nun endlich die Möglichkeit, angekommen im Sommer des Jahres 2003, nach Antworten zu suchen, um herauszufinden, wer ihm all dies angetan hat und vor allem warum. Mehr will ich auch nicht von der eigentlichen Handlung preisgeben, denn ansonsten gerate ich in große Gefahr, den eigentlichen Grund für die plötzliche Inhaftierung von Oh Dae-su und seinen langen Gefängnisaufenthalt zu verraten. Aus meiner persönlichen Sicht kann ich aber sagen, dass die Handlung und auch die Suche nach Antworten sehr spannend inszeniert sind, ohne dass der Film die Atmosphäre eines Krimis oder Thrillers besitzt oder gar selbst aufbauen will. Jedoch muss Oh Dae-su stets mit kleinen Hinweisen versuchen, sein eigenes Schicksal Schritt für Schritt aufzuklären, wobei er von einer jungen Frau unterstützt wird, über welche er jedoch am Ende des Films noch eine ziemlich verstörende Wahrheit erfährt und alles daran setzen muss bzw. will, dass diese selbst nichts von dieser Wahrheit mitbekommt. Auf seiner Suche scheint Oh Dae-su stets ein geheimnisvoller Mann voraus zu sein, der offensichtlich einen ziemlichen Hass auf Oh Dae-su hegt und der Grund für sein Schicksal sein muss, jedoch die ganze Zeit mehr oder weniger mit ihm spielt. Schließlich gibt er Oh Dae-su fünf Tage Zeit, alles über sein eigenes Verschwinden aufzuklären, denn ansonsten stirbt seine weibliche Begleiterin, die ihm auf der Suche nach Antworten hilft. Mir gelang es bereits von Anfang an, mich mit dem Hauptcharakter identifizieren zu können. Da sitzt er nun, eingesperrt in einem Raum und wird langsam aber sicher verrückt. Gerade von der Gesellschaft eher isoliert lebende Menschen besitzen hier sicherlich die Möglichkeit, Oh Dae-su rasch als Protagonisten akzeptieren zu können. Dass dieser auf seiner Suche nach der Wahrheit auch zu allem entschlossen ist und selbst einen großen Hass auf den ihm unbekannten Täter besitzt, der ihm all dies schließlich angetan und 15 Jahre seines Lebens geraubt hat, ist dabei vollkommen verständlich. Jedoch besitzt auch der eigentliche Antagonist des Films einen sehr triftigen Grund, warum er Oh Dae-su all dies angetan hat, obwohl der alles auslösende Vorfall, welcher am 5. Juli 1979 geschah, schon sehr lange her ist. Aber wie bereits erwähnt, wenn ich jetzt noch mehr darüber schreiben würde, so würde ich definitiv zu viel von der sehr guten Handlung verraten und dann würde es sich gar nicht lohnen, sich den Film selbst anzuschauen. Oh Dae-su selbst ist als Charakter zwar der Protagonist des Films, jedoch in seiner Art und Weise kein strahlender Held, sondern eher ein Opfer seines eigenen Schicksals, dem nun alles egal zu sein scheint, solange er nur seine Rache bekommen kann, auf welche Weise auch immer. Ihm macht es jedenfalls nichts aus, blutüberströmt sowie bei hellem Tageslicht durch die Straßen zu laufen oder auch einen noch lebenden Tintenfisch zu verschlingen. Mir hat all dies sehr gut gefallen, denn tatsächlich hat man es hier mit einem Charakter zu tun, der eigentlich nur schwerlich des Titels Protagonist würdig ist, in seinen Handlungen jedoch auch wiederum sehr nachvollziehbar wirkt, aufgrund seines extrem unfairen Schicksals und seiner verzweifelten Suche nach Antworten. Ich habe zwar schon sehr viele asiatische Filme gesehen, jedoch fällt mir spontan auch kein Film ein, der einen ganz ähnlichen Hauptcharakter aufzubieten hat, maximal vielleicht noch der japanische Film „The World Of Kanako“. Gerade deshalb hatte mir „Oldboy“ auch so gut gefallen, denn er lebt, meiner persönlichen Meinung nach, nicht nur von seiner spannend inszenierten Handlung, sondern vor allem auch von seinem sehr guten Hauptcharakter, der trotzdem immer noch glaubwürdig genug bleibt. Ich habe in der Überschrift meiner Rezension bereits angemerkt, dass „Oldboy“ auch sehr hart sein kann und tatsächlich trifft dies auf einige Stellen des Films zu. Zwar gibt es auch nicht allzu viele Gewaltszenen, doch wenn eine von diesen auftritt, dann ist diese auch ziemlich heftig. Am widerlichsten fand ich hierbei eine Szene, in welcher Oh Dae-su zu seinem ehemaligen Gefängnis zurückkehrt und sich äußerst brutal am Leiter des Gefängnisses rächt, indem er diesem auf sehr grausame Weise einige Zähne zieht. Jedoch gibt Oh Dae-su im Film zu, dass er selbst zu einem Monster wurde, eben weil er so lange eingesperrt gewesen war, ohne überhaupt den Grund dafür zu kennen. Auch fragt er sich sogar, ob er zu seinem eigenen Selbst überhaupt zurückkehren wird, sobald er am Verantwortlichen für all das seine Rache genommen hat, da er nämlich befürchtet, auch danach dieses brutale Monster zu bleiben. Es ist also nicht so, dass er schon immer ein gewalttätiger Mensch gewesen wäre, obwohl er, laut seiner eigenen Aussage, nie wirklich mit anderen Menschen klargekommen war. Doch da Oh Dae-su nun überhaupt nichts mehr zu verlieren hat und nicht einmal seine weibliche Begleiterin, als sie ihn einmal darum bittet, von seinem Wunsch nach Rache abbringen kann, ist ihm dies auch erst einmal völlig egal, ob er nun ein Monster bleibt oder wieder zu seinem wahren Selbst zurückfinden wird. Meiner persönlichen Meinung nach besitzt der Film hier eine sehr wichtige Metapher. Zwar ist Oh Dae-su der klare Protagonist des Films, wenngleich er kaum wie ein wirklicher Protagonist wirkt, was ich weiter oben in meiner Rezension schon erwähnt habe und auch sehr gut finde, jedoch hegt er nun einen solchen Hass in sich, dass er kein Problem damit besitzt, zu exzessiver Gewalt zu greifen. Tatsächlich ist dies auch in der Realität gut möglich, denn selbst der friedfertigste Mensch besitzt irgendwo eine gewisse Grenze, bei dessen Überschreitung er schließlich eiskalt sowie unberechenbar wird. Schade finde ich jedoch, dass man im Film überhaupt nicht darüber aufgeklärt wird, warum dieses Gefängnis überhaupt existiert und wer all die anderen Gefangenen sind, die sich dort ebenfalls befinden und bei denen Oh Dae-su auch nie den Versuch einer Befreiung unternimmt, obwohl er selbst auf dem Flur eine ganze Horde aus Schlägern im Alleingang fertigmacht und alle Gefangenen hätte befreien können. Trotzdem fand ich diese Szene wiederum sehr gut, denn da alles von der Seite sowie ohne Schnitte dargestellt wird, hat diese Szene schon fast den Charakter eines 2D-Prügelspiels, sodass ich mir beim Anschauen schon fast ein Gamepad gewünscht hatte. Auch sonst fand ich die relativ wenigen Actioneinlagen sehr gut und ich habe mich stellenweise, gerade auch beim Ziehen der Zähne, sogar gefragt, ob die Freigabe ab 16 Jahren vielleicht nicht doch noch ein wenig niedrig ist. Nein, ich bin wahrlich kein Freund der FSK oder vom Jugendschutz generell, gerade in heutigen Zeiten, wo im Internet alles frei und 24 Stunden lang verfügbar ist, jedoch habe ich schon weniger harte asiatische Filme gesehen und diese haben trotzdem noch eine 18+-Bewertung von der FSK erhalten, was mich dann doch ziemlich verwundert. Immerhin besitzt die Blu-Ray-Box ein Wendecover, sodass das Symbol der FSK nicht weiter stört. Ohne jetzt etwas verraten zu wollen, so fand ich den Grund, warum Oh Dae-su all dies überhaupt angetan wurde, doch schon ein wenig banal und sein Gegner wäre sicherlich nicht in der Lage gewesen, sich auf diese sehr aufwendige Art und Weise an Oh Dae-su zu rächen, hätte dieser es nicht zu einem gewaltigen Vermögen gebracht. Ebenfalls verwundert hatte mich, dass sich Oh Dae-su nicht wirklich an seinem Kontrahenten rächt, denn es gibt da eine schlimme Wahrheit, von der er nicht will, dass jemand anderes davon erfährt. Tatsächlich ist die Art und Weise, wie sich sein Kontrahent an ihm rächt, extrem perfide und scheint so fast eine Art Gleichstand zwischen den beiden hervorzurufen. Dies fand ich dann wieder sehr gut, denn es sorgt auch dafür, dass selbst am Ende des Films nicht mit einer ziemlichen Überraschung gegeizt wird. Sicherlich sind auch die sehr guten Schauspieler dafür verantwortlich, dass man von den verschiedenen Charakteren wunderbar unterhalten wird, allen voran natürlich vom Hauptcharakter Oh Dae-su, gespielt von Choi Min-sik, mit welchem ich mich persönlich auch sehr gut identifizieren konnte, insbesondere dann, als er für 15 Jahre in einem Zimmer eingesperrt war. Dank der Szenen mit dem Fernseher merkt man dann auch, wie sich die Welt immer weiterbewegt und große Ereignisse geschehen, die in dem abgesperrten Zimmer jedoch keine Rolle spielen, da dort die Zeit einfach stehen bleibt. So werden beispielsweise der Tod von Prinzessin Diana, der Übergang ins Jahr 2000 sowie auch die Anschläge vom 11. September 2001 gezeigt, von denen Oh Dae-su nichts wüsste, hätte er nicht seinen Fernseher. Wer jedoch in einer solchen Isolation, wenngleich auch nicht freiwillig, lebt, für diesen haben all diese geschichtsträchtigen Ereignisse überhaupt keine Bedeutung und als Oh Dae-su schließlich in die Freiheit entlassen wird, staunt er auch nicht schlecht, als die Straße, auf welcher er 1988 entführt wurde, nicht mehr existiert, da dort nun ein Hochhaus steht. Ich finde dies jedenfalls sehr gut gemacht und es hat mich persönlich auch ein wenig zum Nachdenken angeregt, beispielsweise mit der Frage, wie ich mich in meinem Charakter ändern würde, würde mit mir dasselbe geschehen und dafür sorgen, dass ich fünfzehn Jahre lang nicht einmal irgendeinen Kontakt zu Menschen erhalte. Am Anfang des Films wird man noch darauf hingewiesen, dass der Film zu seinem zehnjährigen Jubiläum, sprich 2013, digital aufbereitet wurde. Da ich den Film nie in einer vorherigen Fassung gesehen habe, weiß ich nun nicht, ob sich das Bild groß verbessert hat, jedoch kann ich mich über die sehr scharfe Bildqualität der Blu-Ray und auch über den Ton keinesfalls beschweren, wobei ich diese Aussage, bezüglich des Tons, allein beim original koreanischen Ton sowie mit eingeschalteten deutschen Untertiteln treffen kann, da ich mir den Film allein auf diese Weise angesehen habe. Würde ich jetzt noch mehr über „Oldboy“ schreiben, so würde ich nur die sehr gute Handlung offenbaren, was jedoch ein äußerst großer Fehler wäre. Daher kann ich abschließend nur noch schreiben, dass ich „Oldboy“ jedem Interessierten ausnahmslos empfehlen kann und ich bin überaus froh, diesen Film, der hier in einer außerordentlich guten Blu-Ray-Qualität daherkommt, zu meiner asiatischen Filmesammlung zugefügt zu haben, denn tatsächlich schaue ich ihn mir auch dann noch gerne an, wenn ich die Handlung des Films längst kenne, was, meiner persönlichen Meinung nach, nur unterstreicht, wie gut dieser Film tatsächlich ist. Wie gesagt, es ist allein meine eigene, persönliche Meinung, doch ich halte „Oldboy“ sogar für ein positives Paradebeispiel des südkoreanischen Kinos sowie für einen zeitlosen Klassiker.

Este blu-ray 4K por parte de NEON se ve espectacular, tanto la calidad de la imagen como el empaque en el que viene. Incluye un pequeño libro que habla de la película e incluye algunos storyboards. Los extras incluidos en el segundo disco son muy extensos, incluye el documental "Autobiography of Oldboy" con una duración de más de 3 horas. El precio lo vale a mi parecer, es esencial para cualquier fan de este filme de Park Chan-wook. OJO: No cuenta con subtítulos al español, todos son en inglés.

Chan-wook Park's 'Oldboy' is a tale of revenge. But to simplify the movie in one word would be to do it injustice. Raising questions right from the opening sequence till the very last frame as the credits begin to roll, the story is as engaging as it is thought-provoking. The characters are resolved wonderfully, especially Min-sik Choi's 'Oh Dae-su'. The cinematography and soundtrack lend to the drama, often becoming characters by themselves. The Tartan Asia Extreme Edition Blu-ray is the best way to see the film as of today. Video quality boasts of excellent preservation of grain structure and some impressive black levels. Close-ups reveal a lot of detail like wrinkles, pores and cloth textures. It easily one-ups any previous editions of the film as one can now appreciate the already stunning cinematography on a completely new level. Audio is presented in the form of a DTS 7.1 HD Master Korean track along with a couple of lossy options for the native language. There are two lossy English tracks on the disc, but the movie is best seen in its native language for maximum impact of the acting. I saw the movie in the lossless audio format, and the experience was terrific. The soundtrack is clearer than ever, there is much more ambiance than one might have expected and the dialogue is crisp. Gore-lovers will appreciate the audio detail in sounds that compliment the visual cues of torture and violence. Of course, it might also turn out to be a bit too much for the squeamish. Anyone who appreciates this movie deserves to treat him/herself with this edition. If you haven't seen the movie yet, get this disc anyway. Just be prepared for a ride you might never forget.

Del film ho poco da dire: CAPOLAVORO! Certo, ci sarebbe da dire ancora molto su questo magnifico film, ma penso che capolavoro basti per fare capire tutta la sua grandiosità. Finalmente anche da noi una versione in Bluray/4K degna di questa immensa pellicola. Per fortuna è stata inventata questa Midnight Factory che ci porta (per la maggiore) i migliori film Horror (E non ) in Bluray, con confezioni degne di noi collezionisti e ancora amanti del supporto fisico. Ottima master sia audio che video.
