Excellent for serrated knives
If you're like me, you read all the recent reviews (I give no credence to old reviews, regardless of Amazon sorting). This thing is awesome for sharpening serrated knives. I want to dispute some things negative reviews have stated. The handles are easy to open on the ones I received. And who cares - if you don't like it, send it back. The other main complaint from people is the diamonds rubbing off. It's possible there was some bad plating at one time, but not now. If you use it correctly, with essentially no pressure (never use pressure with diamonds), follow the instructions (read them!), or look at other websites that explain in much more detail, you will have no problems. Diamonds are so different than other sharpening methods that you have to discount reviews from people who haven't used them before, even if they claim to be experienced - they may not be experienced with diamonds. They work. Use as directed. I do hate the handles and would gladly pay double for nice ergonomic (not even retractable) handles. A nice round wooden handle would be better. I can't ding a star because of the lousy handles because the price is right for what you get, as it is. I'm sharpening Cutco serrated knives which have this ridiculous "D" serration. All that does is try to ensure you use them for sharpening (and buying more knives). Even the micro-serration on the cheese knife is no problem for this sharpener. Multi-level marketing at its worst. They are great knives, but go ahead and sharpen them yourself. Re-profile them with these DMT sharpeners. It takes very little work to fix them up. Use diamond plates for the non-serrated knives. We love our Cutco knives, but have now resorted to sharpening them ourselves. Definitely do not use the Cutco sharpener. That is a total waste of money.

very simple and easy to use
I seriously wish i could give this product more then 5 stars .. i have always despised serrated edge knives because I could never sharpen them . well i have started making more bread etc needing the serrated knife sharp .. i have an heirloom knife for bread so i had to sharpen this to use .. well this tool is so simple to use i have been pleasantly surprised how well it sharpened my knife . this tool is easy to grip as well the tool does not feel gritty the sharpening part nor did i noticed anything on the knife after i sharpened it like you may see when use a stone to sharpen knives . I have to say this works quit well is an excellent tool as well as a great value .

Quality, Worth the price, Flimsy but quality handle
Been wanting one of these diamond rods for the serrated knives that customers bring me so i decided to get one. Out of the package it looks and feels nice, handle is a little flimsy but thats not the main focus. It snaps closed and open and stays in place which is nice to have but ofcourse its plastic so it has a little flex. The diamond rod itself is pretty nice, just like all the dmt products its got a good coating of diamonds and is true to its grit. Its pretty simple to use and the tapered cone is amazing for diffirent sizes and needs but i do wish dmt had a product like the Warthog serrated sharpener that has a + shape rod with 4 diffirent sizes for diffirent serrations. The biggest downside is just the fact that its not one set size and can make it a little akward sharpening serrations but for the price and grit options you cant really complain. Overall a good experience and will definitely be a commonly used tool in my sharpening!

Great for serrated edges, pen knives, pocket knives, exacto knives and carving / cutting tools with contoured edges!
I have this Diafold "Serrated" Knife sharpener in the Fine and Coarse diamond grits, and has thus far been very impressed with the quality of these sharpeners. I originally bought this with just the task of sharpening serrated knife edges in mind, but this sharpener has turned out to be more than just that. First, for the serrated edges - I have two Sypderco knives (Police, Delica) that have a combo serrated edge, and between this and the coarse grit, it works very well on re-honing the edge on the serrated VG-10 edges. Due to the VG-10 being a little more difficult to sharpen, your method has to be steady and you have to stick with it on the fine grit to get a nice edge. For the serrated knives in the kitchen - most of my kitchen knives are much softer and easier to sharpen than the Spyderco serrated edge - so after sharpening the Spyderco's the kitchen knives were a breeze. I used the coarse to get the edge started, then moved to this fine grit to finish it off. Where this sharpener came in handy and as a surprise is when I discovered how well this works on my small pen knives, pocket knives and mostly woodshop tools. It is perfect for pen knives and small pocket knives for touching up an edge - the size of the rounded rod is perfect for control and for small edges. Also, in my woodshop I use exactor knives and other carving / cutting tools that have curved edges For instance, Lee Valley makes a small carving tool with replaceable blades of different shapes / contours - like curved, sloped, straight blades - and these Diafold rod sharpeners turned out to be PERFECT for this application. I have also employed this tool in some of my plane restoration projects when there are tight spots that need a little filing or honing. The uses for this tool seem to increase daily. For instance,I wanted to touch up the edges on my electric hedge trimmer - again, tight spots without a lot of clearance and small edges to sharpen on the hedge trimmer - and this tool again shone in that application. Nice tool, highly recommended if you have any applications like serrated, tight spots, small edges, etc. I own many DMT tools, and the quality does not need to be justified - that is one thing you can rest assured of, that the quality is there. Thanks for reading.

Great addition to your knife maintenance kit! Shipped fast and allow you to get to the blade surfaces in those serrated blades. Small, portable and can get you to the right angle quickly. The DMT brand means GREAT value for money!!

Bad Product Design on DMT Diafold Diamond Hone
Excellent example of the product designer choosing the wrong plastic material for the hinge. The clear plastic hinge part has two indents on opposite sides of each hinge which are supposed to allow two protrusions of the red plastic part to snap into the indent when closing and opening. I tried very gentle pressure several times but the red part would not pop out of the clear part indents. Finally put more pressure on it and it broke apart. I think this is an old inventory item and with age the red plastic material has hardened and crystallized. The molecules have lost there ability to "give" (elasticity) and snap back (memory). I notice several recent customers had the same issue, probably due to age of the plastic (more failures ahead unless they purge their inventory). Bad choice of materials in the original design. I will keep the conical hone and make a wood handle for it. I'm a woodworker.

If you need something for tight spaces, just buy it. I have NEVER had a company take such good care of me..
Update 2/1/17: I The one I received broke on the second use. I called DMT and they sent me a new one, priority mail. They stood behind their product with absolutely no hassles. Even though the first one broke, because of this they still get 5 Stars from me. Update 1/23/17: I recently ordered another one because I lost the first one. Can't really function in my sharpening world without it. I sharpen knives, scissors and garden tools for supplemental retirement hobby income. This tool lets me get into tight spots without having to disassemble garden shears and such. Great for rounded edges that need sharpening and tight spots. Updated 5/3/2017. Ok, so I put too much pressure on it and broke it at the handle. Called the company and they told me they would send a couple of handles as I did this to another one also. Didn't receive anything for abut 10 days....started thinking about it, and in the mail today arrived two new complete of these tapered sharpeners, along with a folding flat file (fine) marked demo. If I had to reduce my tools to a small carry bag, you can be sure this would be in it. If I had to reduce to just one tool in my arsenal, this would be in the final three.

This works great for sharpening serrated knives and i have gotten by ...
This works great for sharpening serrated knives and i have gotten by fine with just the one grit for down in the deep parts and on the points that do most of the cutting I use a normal whetstone, leather strop to bring the points of the teeth to a mirror polish like on a regular knife. Don't see the need for multiple grits of this type of sharpener: down in the wells you don't do that much cutting so they don't need to be extreme sharp and you also don't normally have to file out chips or have big knicks in the blade of a bread knife so I can't see the need for anything super coarse to file them out. A potential improvement to this product would be to make the diamond rod longer and taper wider at the base. But it works well as it is and has made sharpening my serrated blades easier. It is nice to have a sharp bread knife; when you do not the bread gets squished down when cutting and throws off more crumbs so it's messier and not as pretty. If you buy just a 1000 grit you can get sharp serrated blades without putting out too much money. I'm sure you can do a little better with higher numbers but I have had good results with just the one.

Wrong picture
It didn't come with a round handle as shown instead it is a plastic foldable rectangular handle. It's not good to use that type of handle.

Sehr gut!

Flimsy DMT
Although the DMT diamond knife sharpener worked well, the construction is very flimsy and disappointing. Surely, the plastic handles could have been made more sturdy!
