Review: Quite realistic - This movie is rough, tough, gritty, and not for the faint of heart. Stanley Kubrick was a master director. There are two stories in this movie, but they are very much intertwined. 1.) Boot camp, and 2.) The Vietnam war. It does a great job laying the foundation, purpose and programming of boot camp in order to prepare one for war. And then the horrible tragedy and dangers of war. It also asks the question: "Why are we doing either?" Ermy, never having acted, did a great job. Even though at one time in real life he was a Marine DI, in this movie, he was a bit old for the part. Most DI's are in their mid - late 20's. Ermy was in his early 40's when this was filmed. Having done it in real life, Ermy added realism to the part, that as an actor, did not have to be taught to him. Having been in the Marines for 4 years, when I first saw this movie, I felt it was a very close approximation as to what boot camp was like. More-so than any previous movie up to that time. At times it was almost as if they wheeled in a camera to film an actual platoon going through boot camp, both inside the barracks, and out on the parade deck when they were practicing/learning how to march. Overall this is an excellent movie. The 4k transfer is pretty good, and the audio track is excellent. Not what you would call a “happy” movie, but a very important movie, one of the best documentaries of the Vietnam era. R. Lee Ermy’s drill sergeant in the first half of the movie (the training half) is alone worth the price of the disc.
