Learn to Program with Minecraft: Transform Your World with the Power of Python [Richardson, Craig] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Learn to Program with Minecraft: Transform Your World with the Power of Python Review: Best intro to programming I’ve ever seen - As a professional software developer, I have to say that this is one of the best introductory level programming books I’ve ever seen. It tells kids just what they need to know to understand what they’re doing, and they get the immediate reward of seeing the action carried out in the game. It consistently links the lessons to results in the game, making it easy to stick with. It’s printed in full color so the code has syntax highlighting and images from the game to illustrate what it’s doing. Python was a good choice for the language to use, as it’s easy to learn and was created with the goal of being easy to understand by anyone. I got this for my son, who is 11, and loves Minecraft. He’s already done a fair amount to customize things himself and was very excited to take that further. I think this book is appropriate for any kid with the attention span and interest to try it out. The constant reward of seeing their work pay off will give them the excitement and confidence to drive them forward. They will need help from time to time, but even if you yourself don’t have experience programming, the book is very clear and should give you what you need to walk them through it. Review: Interesting book to inspire kids to learn coding - This book covers basic Python programming in a kids friendly way. It shows kids how powerful a programming language can be and influences their Minecraft building in many creative ways. The book was written a few years ago. As of 2024, both Minecraft and Python have up rev many times already. The key to run those codes with latest software is to compile spigot.jar with latest Minecraft rev and use that with your Minecraft server.

Great book, with some inevitable caveats.
There haven’t been many recent reviews, so I wanted to share my experience to help others considering this resource for teaching kids coding. First off, the book really does deliver… even now in 2026. It is an excellent way for children to learn Python in a way that is relatable and engaging. It starts with the basics and gradually builds skills step by step. My child was excited to dive in and even saw coding as a fun way to earn more screen time. I also find that reading the instructions, rather than relying solely on digital tutorials, seems to improve retention and understanding. All wins in my book! Now, onto the challenges. As others have noted, there is a steep learning curve because the software mentioned in the book is outdated. That’s just the nature of any tech-oriented literature. That said, if you are at least a little savvy with computers and comfortable using tools like ChatGPT, you can absolutely get your child set up. I am not an engineer, just a determined mom supporting my child’s interest, but it worked for me. For Windows, I searched and downloaded the latest versions of Minecraft (Java version), Python, and Java on a PC with sufficient memory. I initially struggled finding the Minecraft Python API and Spigot mentioned in the book, but I jumped onto ChatGPT to explain what I’d already done and what I was trying to achieve (including the name of book/author). This saved me so much time and frustration… I was able to get everything running this way. I also had ChatGPT provide me start-up and demonstration instructions (placing a block above my character) to confirm everything was communicating properly, troubleshooting as I went. Once completely set up, I created desktop shortcuts for each app in the order they needed to be opened. After that, my son was ready to jump right into Chapter 2. You could also have your child help with this initial process to promote problem solving, resourcefulness and AI literacy, as the future of coding is quickly trending toward being driven by AI anyway. I hope this helps someone else, as some of the other reviews can feel discouraging. If I can manage it, so can you. ☺️

Very thorough, written for an amateur
Bought this to help my little niece (13, really into Minecraft) start learning to code. She's been playing around with some complicated mods for a while now, and I figured it was time. I chose this book specifically because it's really apparent that their target audience is a smart and capable teenage programming novice. It has step-by-step instructions for everything (e.g., it doesn't just say "Start your Python editor," it says "Go here to download Python. Install it, and then check here to make sure that you have the right files," etc. As a tech-savvy person, I expected that my niece would be calling me up for help quite a bit at first. But she's been going through this book and I have yet to receive a call for help from her, which is a testament to how thorough this book is.

Reads very well for 9 yr old and 12 yr old
Extremely well written book for kids. My kids are following the steps on their own after help with first two chapters to setup. Recommend looking at comments in other reviews for answers to questions if you are stuck on an error. Lots of helpful q&a and reviews. They helped us get unstuck. Note: My 9 yr old is very advanced and is used to programming in Scratch as well as general troubleshooting of computers/software/mechanics. I would say this is appropriate for anyone 9 and older with a little parent help, and 12 and older without help. This requires you purchase Minecraft from the Mohjang website for your child (Do not purchase the Windows 10 version of Minecraft since that cannot be used for modding at this time).

Software issue
I ordered this book to get my kids interested in coding through their favorite game Minecraft. However, after installing it per the instructions in the book I am unable to get the game to recognize the module. I contacted customer support and they were no help. So if I can't figure it out on my own I have wasted my time and money with this book. Which is too bad, my kids were looking forward to it.

Bought it for my 11 year old brother. He loves it! He downloaded the programs right away and has been working through it. I would definitely recommend it! I don't live in the same city as him so I haven't looked at it in person but I know he's enjoying it! He wanted to learn programming and he also loves Minecraft so this was just perfect for him.

My teenage grandson is a Minecraft addict who's deeply into reprogramming the game, esp using custom command blocks. He has never used Python before but was thrilled to see all the options clearly laid out in this well produced book. A hefty tome which would suit MC players with a similar interest in looking behind the gameplay screen at how to customize the playing experience.
