Excellent compass and I'm not a "starter" nor need you be one.
Everyone should have a compass and it should be a good, viscous damped compass like this one - sure there are cheaper ones without damping but these will drive you nuts as they swing back and forth before settling down a minute or two later which will be the last time you use the thing - when I hear otherwise intelligent people say they don't know how to use a compass I am stunned and immediately buy one of these for them - when push comes to shove your cell/pad/GPS/etc. will not get you out of the woods gracefully as knowing how to use a compass will - even lack of sun will get you so lost you will find yourself somewhere the Deliverance movie cast looks like the intelligentsia - just remember to always carry this with you even if in the emergency compartment of your backpack or whatever.

No air pockets. No bubbles. It points north. I honestly did not think I would be able to find a good affordable compass. It actually works. I could not be more happy with it.

Compass needle did not work.
Needle of compass did not float and when placed on a flat surface remained fixed one side touching the bottom and one side the top. Contacted mfg. who indicated it was defective. I returned to Amazon. Will try on more replacement before giving up on this product.

been using silva's since the early 80's and have aced a lot of land nav courses with one. bought this for someone who had never used a compass, and they took to it like a duck to water. they're fairly simple, robust and light wieght, great for a bug out bag, or simply to have in your pack. navigation with a compass is like learning to drive a stick, once you've got it, everything else is easy. its great fun for kids to learn too!

for the money and the purpose it is well worth considering
O.K. when it comes to magnetic compasses there is a rather wide price range'.....going on a trip taking you deep into the Amazon jungle, maybe it would be wise to set your lower limit for a compass at $40.00 and up....but for travel in the US and most of Canada through areas you have never been and where the chance of meeting another party is rare ...this compass and a set of good govt maps will be all you need, just make sure you know how to use and orient the compass.before you start
