I bought one for my first big backpacking trip in Colorado, and it gave me peace of mind knowing I didn’t have to rely on a finicky lighter. I use it to light my MSR mini stove, and it works perfectly. It’s super lightweight and even fits inside a compact cook setup—no need to carry the bulky case if you’re trying to go ultralight. Just be sure to bring a backup, as always.

I was looking for a "lighter" that was convenient, small and packable to carry with the stove. This and the PocketRocket fit perfectly in the case. The lighter is a piezo electric "spark". No fuel in the lighter and no flame. It generates a spark with each push or "Click" of the button. Simply hold it where you light the stove, turn on the gas and click to light. Any downsides??? I suppose the only downside I can think of is you cannot use it where you might need an actual flame for something. It couldn't be better for lighting the stove in my opinion.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Could this accidentally spark in your backpack?**
A: It's possible for something to apply enough pressure to cause it to spark, but in my opinion, that isn't likely to happen.  The button has to be pressed with a good amount of pressure.  I don't worry about mine sparking in my backpack.

**Q: Does it come with a lanyard?**
A: The one I purchased did not come with a lanyard.  Perhaps they do now.

**Q: Is it be able to ignite char cloth or lint to start a fire?**
A: If you got one that worked. I would say probably not. It is designed to ignite gas fumes requiring much less spark than ordinary flammable products. Mine never worked even on gas fumes. Wouldn't light my MSR stove. Unfortunate because MSR makes some really good products however, this is not one of them.

**Q: Can you use it to ignite alcohol stoves like the Trangia?**
A: Yes, but there's a trick.  I use it to ignite my home-made soda can alcohol stove; works perfectly.  The trick is this: the spark ignites FUMES, not LIQUIDS.  So, if you have an alcohol stove where the liquid alcohol is exposed/visible, swirl the stove around so you get a thin layer of alcohol coating the walls.  This provides a much larger surface area from which the alcohol can evaporate.  Now you have a lot of fumes.  Insert the igniter, push the button, and - FWOOSH - you're lit!
