Some of her behavior is disruptive and inappropriate, but the director and writer never judge her. Rose is an essentially decent person who needs guidance rather than punishment. The movie is otherwise a fairly straightforward nostalgia piece with lots of enjoyable period detail. The director and actors show great respect for the time and place of the setting. If they sometimes mock the gentility of Southern mores, they always do so with a tasteful and gentle touch. You might notice that the movie was produced by Renny "Cliffhanger" Harlin and Mario "Total Recall" Kassar. Who ever would have thought that these purveyors of macho Hollywood blockbusters could produce such a pretty and delicate flower of a movie? I guess there's hope for Hollywood yet.
