The intended use is to plug the little cable into a device (called "the host") and this would give it access to ethernet. I don't think that if you plug devices into the hub they would be connected to the ethernet adapter because they are"downstream", but I must admit I've never actually tried it! **Q: Will it work in opposite mode ie receive internet by USB from tethered phone & distribute via my router when it has no broadband** A: I don't know, but I doubt it very much. "Receiving internet" from a tethered phone is not part of the USB standard. It's usually achieved by setting up the computer's software in a particular way, and the is no software to be set up on this gizmo. Additionally, this is a USB 3.0 hub which needs to distribute power to three USB ports (and a bit of additional power for the Ethernet). That's quite a bit of power to draw off a phone. **Q: Is this compatible with the new M1 Macbook Pro?** A: We use it with a Microsoft Surface Go2. It has a USB C port. Not sure if the MacBook Pro has this port, but if it does it should work fine. We've found it to be the perfect addition providing both Ethernet connectivity and USB ports. Ethernet connection works perfectly with my 1Gbps speed and no latency issues. No issues at all with most USB devices, but causes my wireless mouse (G PRO X Superlight) to stutter when it's plugged into the hub.
