I'd have to agree with that assessment. Its just heavy enough that when you swing it you know it hits with enough force to be deadly. Its just light enough to be agile. If you want to have something quite deadly that doesn't involve a projectile then this is right up that alley. And it CAN be a projectile-if you've got the skills. What its not is heavy enough to do is go out and chop down a forest. Its a tomahawk not an axe. Not designed for that. Designed for "light" camp duty-capable of light camp duty. And the spike does snag wood that's laying on the ground quite nicely. This hawk took quite an edge. Very nice steel. That said it needs to be emphasized that you are very unlikely to buy one of these-take it out of the box-and be ready to roll with it. I bought both this and the riflemans hawk and I know this wasn't the case for me. Other reviews say pretty much the same things-loose or poorly fitting handles, blades needing sharpening, etc. In my case both handles also had the grain aligned "quarter sawn" which means not aligned in a manner that gets as much strength out of the handle as possible. I don't mind because these are excellent hawks that just need some touch ups. For that matter the woods are full of handles. Its the head that you're really paying for. Sure you could say it should already come that way. And you could sure pay a lot more too. I like to save the money and maintenance my own tool-which you have to do anyway as part of its upkeep if you use things like this versus hang them on walls! Fantastic experience. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sturdy and useful *by C***G on November 27, 2018* Speedy delivery, great price. When it arrived, the head was a little loose on the handle. It just got cold, and shrinkage happens. No biggie. I removed the set screw and did a little rasping and sanding and it is now quite decent. Grain alignment is about 50-60 degrees off center, but there is no appreciable run-out, so that's good. It did throw a few splinters until I spent about 30 seconds sanding the length of the haft. Some Danish Oil + paste wax and eventually a new handle are in it's future. It was also butter-knife sharp. Also no biggie. 15 min worth of file and stone work put a good edge on it. My 10yo and I spent a few hours in the woods playing with it. The spike is great for digging, splitting kindling, and generally wrecking things (we found a trove of fat lighter and the spike was most helpful in liberating it from the rest of the dead, fallen tree) and the edge on the bit seems to be holding up well. It is fairly long, so two-handed swings aren't ridiculous, especially for the 10yo, but it is light enough for me to use one handed, and it's fairly comfortable when I choke up on it to use more like a knife. The edge grind on the bit is clearly asymmetrical, like it was done by hand and at different angles on each side. YMMV, but this isn't a horrible con for me. My hands aren't sensitive enough to tell while chopping with it, and it doesn't seem to hinder it's capabilities in any way. Cosmetically it's somewhat disappointing, but... eh. If you're looking for something that's perfect out of the box, look elsewhere, but if you're looking for something that is a fun and useful tool and also an enjoyable wintertime project, I highly recommend this spike hawk. Update: After nearly a year of using this, I've come to love it's utility. I stripped the black paint off and sharpened the edge to a mirror-polished convex edge on a Scimech flathone. It holds an edge well, and no signs of rust without the paint so far. I did the Danish oil/paste wax on the handle and it made a world of difference. I can't reiterate enough how useful the spike is for splitting. It's SO much easier to get started on smaller, harder pieces. Bites in super quick, and acts like a splitting wedge. And since it's taller than it is wide, once it's all the way in a quick 90 degree turn provides even more splitting action. Runs out of gas on limbs bigger than 3" or so. It can be done, just a lot more work. I have recently been using this on one of the longer (30") handles that typically sell with the Viking hand axe. The extra length gives more power for two-handed swings, but can be a bit awkward for one handed use in some circumstances. It's also in the length range that making downward chops with it could be dangerous, so be aware of proper stance and technique. Kneeling is a good idea. That said, I haven't felt the urge to go back to the short handle for around-the-yard use.
