4 out of 5 tubs are defective.
The first tb I ordered was awesome. My only complaint was that the coverage was poor, only covered about 6 square feet. Despite the poor coverage I was happy about how clean it got my bricks, so I ordered 2 more tubs. These arrived slightly not perfectly sealed, and as a result the product was thick, like the consistency of silly putty or canned cranberry sauce. I was not able to stir the product or apply it with a brush. I requested replacement product which arrived promptly but had issues too- only 1 of the 2 tubs was useable! It was still thicker than the initial product I recieved, but I could still spread it with a brush. The volume of product in the other tub was significantly less, and was thick like putty. I do not recommend this product. Out of 5 tubs, only one was usable. And at $62/tub... this is an expensive way to clean your fireplace bricks. Not to mention the set back as far as time is concerned waiting for product.

These people stand behind their product!
This was a problem at first. My fireplace outer surface is under 40 square feet, so I purchased half a gallon of Paint and Peel. I spent couple of hours applying it brick by brick, not using the provided brush but another smaller one, so I could apply it over individual bricks and grout spaces thoroughly. I did 2 coats, at places even 3 and used all of the product. Apparently it just came not thick enough. Two days later, when the layer turned transparent and ready for peeling (picture 1) - I couldn’t peel it at all. It was too thin and resembled bubble gum smeared all over the wall, every attempt to remove it just caused it to tear instantly, no matter if I used fingers, nails, tweezers or scraper (picture 2). It looked hopeless, so I left a complaint here on Amazon. I was then immediately contacted by Shawn Wright from SaverSystems. We communicated via email, I explained the situation and sent him some pictures. He wrote back that he will mail me more product in order to apply it again in a thicker layer. The reassurance he gave me that the product will bond with its old layer was relieving because I was out of options for removing the dried thing and this meant there was actually a hope for a solution. Light in the tunnel. Few days later just as he promised I received a package in the mail containing three! (3) additional half gallon buckets of Paint and Peel. A $150+ value absolutely free. It took me another 3 and half hours to apply it, which I did just as meticulously as first time. I didn’t treat it like paint this time, I worked with it as with plaster instead. The new layer I put was as thick as it was possible to be without dripping down by gravity (pictures 3 & 4). 2 days later it was partially transparent, but the deep niches between bricks were still whitish, so I gave it additional 4 days to dry out completely. Thus, about a week after applying it a second time it looked ready for the crucial big peel step. I took me one evening from 9pm to about 1am but I was able to remove it ALL! What a relief!! What slowed me down was a strip around the fire door and another one under the wooden top which I had to scrape away inch by inch because it was still too thin (I simply shouldn’t have reached so deep into those places with the brush), other than that it peeled off mostly like in their video. I could pull it off the wall few bricks at a time using both hands. At the end I washed the bricks with a damp cloth just in case. The overall result is stunning – this product preserved the natural color of the bricks while refreshing them and the smoked dark spots are gone (pics 5 & 6). The fireplace now looks fresh, bright and new. Much better than if I had painted it with masonry paint. It took me about 10 hours of kneeling and squatting around this tiny fireplace mostly because I knew no better to apply it like plaster, not paint, however the end result will be rewarding for many years to come. Even if you avoid doing my mistakes you should still prepare for hard work. But I think it’s well worth it. My special thanks go to Shawn Wright from SaverSystem, you truly saved my project Shawn, I wouldn’t have dared to apply more product on my own, so if it wasn’t for your help this fireplace would’ve been a total mess. Thank you for not allowing this! Paint and Peel really works when used and applied right!

It's a lot of preparation, but it works
Overall, I'm glad I used this product, but... As others have mentioned, you reeeeally need to put this on thick. Like, even thicker than that. No, even thicker than that. And, if you don't you will regret trying to peel off the thin product, which turns an unsavory dark green. Also, as a result of how thick you need to apply it, it took three cans to do half of my chimney. Yup, you need to apply that thick. Don't bother buying the suggested brush. You'll need to use your hands to pack it on. (Please re-read that sentence. You will need to pack this on with your hands. The included brush is a joke.) First tape off areas, to ensure a very thick line of product will dry in a uniform line, making it easier to peel off later. Do yourself a favor, and also tape off areas that are hard to see, to avoid getting product there. For me, it was bricks which stick out further than the other bricks. So, the underside of the brick was really hard to see how thick I was applying it. Reserve a little product once you're done, and wait an hour or two. You'll notice areas where you can still see the bricks. Trust me, you NEED to apply more product to these thin areas, or you will regret using this product. Now that you've applied the product THICK, point a fan at the chimney to help it dry, and wait 24 - 48 hours. It's rough on older brick. My house is over 80 years old. It tore off bits of my limestone bricks and mortar. But, it is cleaner.

it works if you work it right
This product can be amazing or horrible, depending on the user :) I've had both experiences. Bought a container, applied what I thought was a thick layer to the inside of my fireplace bricks, which are not really porous. You could see it darken and dry over time, and change color as it absorbed soot, and absorbed somewhat into the brick. The product easily peeled of in one glorious sheet two days later, and the bricks weren't pristine, but 100% better, so I planned on several applications over the next few weeks. The soot didn't get on there in one application, so for another 50 bucks I would do it again. Next I used it on the exterior red brick of the fireplace, which was much more porous. Using the same level of thickness, over the 48 hours the product absorbed so much into the brick much of it was impossible to peel off 2 days later. I spend an evening picking with tweezers and bottle-neck pliers with some success but it would take days . . . so I bought yet another container and reapplied it thickly thickly over the red brick again , including the peels still left. This time also I didn't use the brush, but used my hands, with plastic gloves, so I could feel and better control the thickness so it was uniform. It took three days to dry, but this time everything came off. and the red brick was immaculate. So I will use this again for the inside brick. Recommend to use manual application rather than a brush. make sure edges are equally as thick as the rest of the application, (fading to the edge or little pieces at the edges happen naturally during an application, but you have to keep uniform thickness. email me if you have any questions. Did the job well with no smell
Some previous owners of our house had a chimney fire that resulted in creosote goo spilling down the side of the chimney, which was for a wood stove in our kitchen. Before converting it to a pellet stove, we wanted to clean it up. I did 3 treatments -- really 2 was probably enough but we had extra, so just kept going. The final result is one we can live with, a huge improvement. As you can see, it doesn't do as well on the mortar as it does on brick, but I could probably treat it again and get more off. This product worked as well or better than we expected after reading the other reviews. We were afraid we'd have to get professional help, or use some nasty toxic chemicals on it, and were delighted with this goop, which has just a slight cement-like odor, and comes off so clean and neat. About that -- as many have said, it is important to get it on thick. First, I used a cheap throw-away brush. What worked for me was this: 1) after taping around the edges, lay on a thick coat as best you can. 2) close the tub, but just leave the brush out -- it will not harden or dry quickly like paint. 3) as it dries, you will see spots that you thought you had covered, have started to dry clear, and it's obvious it's pretty thin -- just grab the brush and touch up everywhere that looks thin. 4) Repeat step 3 as necessary. 5) When it's all dry, carefully peal it off by the tape. It always just came right off for me. It was great to see the dark stains on the dried material. I always left it overnight, so it had about 12-24 hours total. This was on brick, as you see in the photos, so it could behave differently on other surfaces of course. My wife and I are quite happy with the results.

Do not use on textures or split brick!
I used the product as described in the instructions applied 3 half gallons to approximately 35 square feet which is near the minimum coverage area. It was thick enough to fall off the fire place several areas as I applied it. Then allowed 48 hours to dry throughly before attempting to remove any area. As you can see from the posted pictures it is actually pulling the brick material off the face of the brick. Also due to the textured surface it constantly tears and gets hung in the crevices of the brick. I will say the brick does appear to be cleaner but not sure having to spend more than $6 a square foot seems a little much but as I have no other plan for removal I will have to double down order more and hope that twice as thick will actaully pull off in larger peices. So now another week for shipping and 2 more days to dry so maybe in 2 weeks I can put everything back up one the fireplace for Christmas! Be careful if you dont have standard faced brick.
