I hated emery boards and metal files (the feel of them and how long it took to use them, and it never quite did what I wanted), but I happened to work at a craft store that sold glass files and I tried one (it was broken and going to the trash) and immediately bought 2 so I could have one at home and one in my purse. My nails were chronically weak, jagged, and splitting, and glass files just seemed to erase all of that; the key thing for this was having one available when anything happened to a nail at all times. Over the years I bought several others, for gifts and for myself, and started running into a problem: glass is fragile XDSo, in 2018 I got on Amazon to specifically find a glass file that came with a sturdy case. The filing surfaces themselves don't wear out, but reaching into a purse full of broken glass is a big nope. I actually found this brand but a different version, and decided to give it a try. I was completely sold: it did everything I wanted, and came in a case. It actually did MORE than I expected, because I had never tried buffing my nails.Which brings me to this specific file, which I purchased Feb 2022 so that I could once again have a file at home and in my purse. I've found there are a couple differences between this one and the previous file I purchased:- The old file is "weaker" and doesn't file as well. In some ways, this makes it a better buffer, but not the best file. The new file is much more effective, and a few vertical swipes at the end of a nail removes a huge amount: I actually use the file to trim my nails instead of clippers because it just gives me so much more control.- The new file doesn't have as snug a fit on the cover. An extremely minor drawback, and based on other reviews it's probably a flaw with just my file. The files themselves are much thicker than the ones I used to have that would break, so I'm not as worried about it breaking if the cover slipped off in my bag. I also don't really like that the cover is transparent, because debris from filing is visible and kinda messy looking (easily fixed with rinsing occasionally, but it's a thing).- Because the new file is so much stronger, it's not great for buffing unless you can be very careful. I accidentally put deep grooves across all my nails trying to buff them and had to wait for them to grow back out. I don't buff my nails often and I still have the other file, so I don't consider this a drawback, just a difference.If you have issues with splitting nails, hangnails, or if you're extremely sensitive to any rough edges (like I am), this is a fantastic tool to keep handy (pun intended). I'm very particular about how my nails are shaped, and fixing a rough/cracked nail as soon as I notice it keeps me from ripping it off and making things worse.
