If the battery is a backup to household power, a standard heavy duty (Non-alkaline) is best and also much cheaper, but needs to be replaced yearly. If the battery is the only power source, an alkaline battery like this is a good choice. Smoke detectors that are household wired and use the battery as a backup need a higher peak voltage to keep them from the occasional chirp sound that drives my dog crazy. A fresh/new heavy duty (non-alkaline) battery puts out over 10 volts and will easily last a year onder the light load of a smoke detector. A fresh/new alkaline battery will only put out about 9.4 - 9.5 volts, but it will handle a greater load for a longer time. My house wired smoke detectors start chirping at just under 9.4 volts, so my dog hates it if I use alkaline batteries in them. **Q: Anybody know the mah rating of these?** A: The box nor battery have MaH.
