I tried metal adjusters that slid along the ring and scratched the platinum- this product causes zero damage to my ring although it slides around the band when my fingers are at their smallest. It is pretty hard to put it on by yourself but unless you lift weights like I do, or some other activity that could possibly damage your jewelry, you probably won't be faced with that aggravation on a daily basis. You put your ring on then slip the adjuster over the ring, then flip the opening on the adjuster to the outside-easier said than done. They are simply short lengths of plastic tubing you can get at the hardware for a fraction of the cost, simply find the right diameter tube, cut the right length then slit it length wise.
