An excellent device
I own multiple GPS devices and at times they have far more features then I need. I wanted something small that was easy to use with reliability and consistent performance. This device fits the bill. It's easy to use, accurate and small. I have used it many times while hunting to mark the location of my Jeep and multiple places in the woods that I wanted to return to. I turn it on, mark the locations and turn it off. When I want to go back I just turn it on and follow the arrow. Very simple! The compass and thermometer work fine too. Follow the directions on initialization and you will have no problems.

save your money
Second time I took the battery compartment screw out the locking ears broke. Had to send it back for repair ($10 s/h) about all the whole unit is worth. Takes forever to lock on satellite if you are walking, 30 minutes or more. Have to calibrate the unit on each start up, buttons very hard to push, back light goes out after short time, no way to set it to stay on. At $68 and now $10 more very close to garmin e-trex, a very useful gps although much larger and heavier.

Hit and Miss
The good-Good features and decent price. Once you calibrate ( see below ) the compass, it is reliable. The bad- Not liking the fact I have to do the "figure 8" motion to calibrate the compass every time. If you forget to do so, the compass is not reliable. ALSO, the small METAL clip...remove it and use a leather shoelace to secure. Compass cannot have metal near it or it messes it up. IF you keep that clip on it on AND forget to calibrate your compass....your lost.

Bushnell Backtrack point 5
A very user friendly item. I have tried it and like it so far. I plan on using it for birdhunting with my dog. Anyone who birhunts new coverts knows how easy it is to get turned around while hunting with your favorite bird dog. I am thinking this will take the guess work out of where we parked the truck. The problem i had was calibrating the compass but one quick call to bushnell got me on track. The figure eight's they descirbe in the directions should be done more like a kid flying a toy plane. So far so good !

Works for me!
The last few years I have gone to the L.A. County Fair, we could not find our car in the parking lot. The lot is huge and there are no lights. It is VERY dark. I'm not the only one - there are people walking all over the place looking for their car. When I saw this product on Amazon (on sale) I thought it was perfect for me. I have tested it many times over the last month in parking lots and it has worked perfectly for me every time. It is, however, not perfect. First, it always takes about 1 minute to find the satellite when you first mark your spot. That is not convenient. If it is raining it is very inconvenient. Also, it is important to walk around in a figure 8 a couple of times to calibrate the internal compass so that it works more precisely, so I always look around to make sure there are no people around to stare at me because it's somewhat embarrasing. BUT, once I mark the original spot it works flawlessly from then on. Also, at least for me, once I leave to go back to my car it seems to find the satellite more quickly than when I first turned it on to mark the spot. The GPS unit in my car finds a satellite within 5 seconds - I don't know why this product takes so long to lock in on one. I love the fact that you can mark up to 5 spots, plus it shows you in yards how far your marked target is as you're walking. It also has a clock, temperature, shows the elevation of your location, and has a compass. If this item found the satellite more quickly I would give it 5 stars. I have only used it in urban areas of Southern California, so I don't know how well it would work while camping somewhere, but I did not buy it for that reason. Update 09/16/11 - I've had this GPS for 9 months now and really enjoy it, but it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes before it locks onto a satellite. I simply turn on the unit 5 minutes before I need it, and that works for me. Other than the long waiting time I have really enjoyed this little GPS and I took it to the LA Fair last week and it led me right to the car in the huge parking lot perfectly. My friends were impressed - especially after it took over 1/2 hour last year to find the car. I still recommend this product.

Will get you lost in a hurry.
Shuts off automatically every 5 minutes. Bushnells web video tells you to do 'figure 8s', 'tumble' the unit (roll over and over), and walk around in circles every time this item powers up. If you wish to do this every 5 minutes, then by all means, this is the unit for you. Even after jumping through all of Bushnells hoops, unit still gets 'confused' easily, and in general points 90 degrees away from your intended path. Returned the item, went with Garmin.

don't waste your hard earned money on this item
I read all the reviews, some bad, some good. I went ahead and bought one anyway. Yeah, it's the hardhead syndrome. Big mistake. If you have 5 minutes of time to calibrate the device every time you leave your car and have another 5 minutes to stand at the exit of the store to calibrate the unit, then by all means, this item is for you. And don't forget the stares you will get from other people while flying your "airplane" or walking in a big circle. However, if you don't want to look foolish standing next to your car, flying the unit in great looping figure eights (just like a child pretending to fly his toy airplane) and flipping in over and over, then walking in a big circle to calibrate it, then pass on this thing. Oh yeah, and there is no guarantee that your calibration worked. You may have to repeat all the tips again and again (straight from the video from their website). It takes a long time to find the satelites, then needs calibrated every time you turn it on. And did I mention that it turns itself off after 5 minutes. So guess what? That's right, another calibration cycle. I have a Magellan Meridian Color GPS handheld and I have never had to calibrate the compass. It knows what is North and South every time. I also have 2 boat sonars and a Navigation unit for my truck with built in GPS and I have never had to calibrate them. So, I guess what I'm telling you is: The Bushnell company really fell flat on their face with this one. Save your money for something worth while. I sent mine back for a refund. Nuff said.

You'll Get Lost Without It!
Short and to the point. This was a perfect item for us. (Mostly for me) as my sense of direction when I'm on a hike is absolutely terrible and it is great for finding your car in parking lots too! If you are directionally challenged, don't hesitate to purchase this great "finder".
