I would think the metal one would be more durable but a little bit heavier** A: I haven't used the metal one but I've used two identical-LOOKING plastic ones: the Red Barron brand, and a less-expensive no-name one which appears to be made from the exact same molds, but of a more porous plastic. If I could remake my choice, I would pay extra for the Red Barron brand capper because I think the plastic it's made from is more trustworthy to be stronger. As it is, I use my no-name plastic capper carefully and have had no problems in about 40 bottles. People say the primary risk of damaging the plastic manual cappers comes from pressing the handles down further than necessary to crimp the cap. The plastic cappers aren't super lightweight either; I would check the shipping weight to compare between metal and plastic ones' weight. **Q: Will it work to recap a lava lamp?** A: This things will definitely work. I’ve tried capping everything I can think of, even things that don’t fit the claws and it capped it. There was a bit of a learning curve for me as I messed up a few caps and broke two bottle necks in learning how to use the tool. Once I learned how much pressure to put on the tool to "cap" the bottle, the broken bottle neck issues have not returned. I believe where I messed up the bottle caps was not opening the tool up properly to the starting position. I was a bit flustered at first and once I changed my methodology, everything has worked very, very well.
