Is the carafe held in place with any force? Or is it just sitting there? I'm thinking of installing this on a boat, will it fall off...?

The carafe does not sit on a flat heated plate and slide around. Instead the hot plate has about a 1/8" deep depression in the centre and carafe has corresponding depression moulded into its bottom so when carafe sits in place the interlocking of the depressions prevent carafe from sliding. There is no part of the coffee maker that holds the carafe on top though so it doesn't take a lot of force to remove it. When there is coffee in the carafe it is even less likely to move because the added weight forces the carafe to interlock with the heated platen. It is not like my early model spacemaker that required significant force to remove the carafe. Other comments are: coffeemaker drips from a few places it shouldn't. If you like coffee hot, be ready to microwave each cup as this guy makes coffee very warm, but not hot. Slide out water reservoir is not the problem you may read about online, easy to work.

How long is the cord?

It has a short electrical cord of around 3 feet which is designed to reduce the risk resulting from becomingentangled in or tripping over a longer cord. Hope this helps.

Can you get a thermal carafe for the 12 cup coffee maker?

The product dimensions according to the black and decker information are 17 x 12 x 13 inches. 17 inches side to side. I believe 12 inches from the wall to the front and 13 inches from the top to the bottom. But, I see you got another response and they probably measured it directly. Petra-
