It had rechargeable batteries that were proprietary, and tried replacements but they are not made anymore and the "new" old stock batteries were in worse shape than the old one. So time for an upgrade. Reading some other reviews that indicated a lot of complicated manual reading and configuration, I found this to just work right out of the box. There are a zillion parts in the box wrapped in little boxes and bags, but it is really simple. It just all plugged together and worked. Great range compared to an earlier Panasonic set, and audio is very loud and clear, and no echos at all. When using the speakerphone on the cordless sets, the speaker is on the back and can sound a bit muffled compared to the earpiece. The only fiddly configuration is pairing your cellphone to the system via bluetooth, however, other than tinkering with it I don't see much need. On the battery note, I was happy to find these use NI-MH cells but they are standard AAA size cells, so any standard NI-MH battery should work when the time comes. Best feature is the Block button, that will be the first thing to wear out on these! I have the base unit on my desk plugged into an electric outlet, and the other units in a bedroom and kitchen. Whenever either one of our cell phones rings, the phones all ring and we can answer on whichever we choose (either #1 or #2 flashes depending on which cell it is). It is easy to transfer the call back to your cell phone too if you want to head out with the cell phone and the call. I really like the ability of the base unit to read the caller ID aloud! I can hear the caller ID read out before I can walk over to the phone to see who it is (if I don't have the cell phone on me). Especially cell phones. Full duplex on phones is an expensive option. On a speakerphone for full duplex to work it has to cancel whatever comes out of the speaker after the mic picks it up and before it is sent out (TXed). Conference systems even use mulitple mics, and phase manipulation to cancel background noises and anything that comes out of the speaker. Full duplex on a speakerphone is not as easy as RF. Lots of features and works great. However, pairing a range extender was problematic and not successful. Panasonic on TWO different occasions told me to purchase TWO different models and neither would pair so I am disappointed by that. I believe that I am able to read directions and the failure to connect was not on my part. I will say that the phone does receive a signal from a pretty good distance from the base when outside.
