It has the metal magnetic piece that goes on the inside of the safe. You pull the strap till you hear the click of it being on the inside of the safe making contact with the door. Tighten the ring and put cover on and lock. When the safe is opened the bar and strap keep it from opening at all if you've done it properly. Not sure how it would work with the locking mechanism of a tonneau cover. **Q: Can this hold a big padlock with thick shackle?** A: Yes, and we recommend you using such a lock as the lock provided with the Milockie is not that robust. **Q: Why don't you upgrade this so it is useable?** A: Hello, A couple of thoughts... If you have purchased this item and are dissatisfied with it please return it for your money back, if it is past the 30 days, please contact us and we can take care of the refund. 2. While the item may be a bit complicated to assemble, it actually does work as a TAMPER-EVIDENT device. Also as a barrier device, it stops those with a pass key or master code from entering your room safe undetected. Most thieves and dishonest hotel employees will pass on a safe protected by a Milockie, instead finding another safe that does not have one (it's like the house with a security yard sign will most likely be passed over for one without a sign by a burglar). 3. As mentioned in the description, please be sure to use your own padlock that is more robust than the one included.
