Can i detach the mounting piece and attach the unit one the mount is up on my ceiling?

The bracket that is mounted to the reel slides into the mounting plate that you attached to the wall or ceiling. As long as you have room on the side you slide the reel out of the bracket, you can remove the reel.

how does it work in the cold

Dear Customer, Thanks for your question. The cord reel is a polypropylene case and has an SJTOW material cord which is weather-resistant and heavy-duty, so it will work well in cold. Hope that helps. Dewenwils Customer Service Team

Can the locking mechanism be removed to provide constant tension?

Dear Customer, Thanks for your question。 Sorry, the locking mechanism can not be removed because it might damage the inner structure of the cord reel. If you need the cord to be in constant tension, you need to pull all cord out or fasten the cord with assist things. Hope this helps. Dewenwils Customer Service Team

I used a major brand reel/cord here in Wisconsin at -25 degrees Fahrenheit and the cord began cracking. What temperature is this rated to?

It can work at the lowest -15 degrees. If the temperature is too low, it can not work normally.
