Product Description The Mosquito pieces can be added to a standard Hive set before the start of the game giving each player 12 pieces to play with. During the game, they are placed in the same way as the other pieces. Once in play, the Mosquito takes on the movement characteristics of any creature it touches at the time, thus changing its characteristics throughout the game. Exception: If moved as a Beetle on top of the Hive, it continues to move as a Beetle until it climbs down from the Hive. From the Manufacturer The Mosquito pieces can be added to a standard Hive® set and are placed in the same way as other pieces. Once in play, a Mosquito can take on the movement ability of any creature of either colour that it is touching at the start of its move (a stack with a Beetle on top counting as a Beetle for this purpose), thus changing its movement characteristics throughout the game.

It's a weird piece, because it adopts the properties of the pieces it's adjacent to, so it can make some games really unpredictable. Like all the rest of the Hive pieces, it's pleasantly chunky and feels wonderful to play with.
Review: Looks okay, feels good, plays very fun. - I was hesitant to buy this expansion as I saw a lot of people complain that the black piece was difficult to see. I definitely agree that it is not the best coloring but it is entirely visible from the right angles. As the attached photos show, the amount of glare on the reflective surface of the piece greatly impacts how visible the markings are. No other pieces in the game have it quite this bad, but it is still workable under the right conditions. The quality of the pieces is great and they mesh nicely with the rest of my set.

**Q: Are the tiles green or black? The original game tiles are nice, solid, black tiles, but these look like they're a different material.**
A: There are two big tile versions of Hive. Hive Original and Hive Carbon. These are identical tiles to Hive Original.

**Q: How does the mosquito move?**
A: The mosquito copies the characteristics of whatever tile it is touching at the start of its move.

**Q: is this for hive compact version?**
A: No, this is for the normal sized Hive pieces. But Hive Pocket should already come with the Mosquito and Ladybug. Only the Pillbug should need to be purchased as an add on for the Hive Pocket set.

**Q: How many mosquitos can we add to basic game???**
A: The mosquito is a pretty powerful piece due to its versatility so the base game rules only allow for one for each player. Probably no one will kick your door down and arrest you in the event you think it fun to play with more, though. ;)

I was hesitant to buy this expansion as I saw a lot of people complain that the black piece was difficult to see. I definitely agree that it is not the best coloring but it is entirely visible from the right angles. As the attached photos show, the amount of glare on the reflective surface of the piece greatly impacts how visible the markings are. No other pieces in the game have it quite this bad, but it is still workable under the right conditions. The quality of the pieces is great and they mesh nicely with the rest of my set.
