Hi,To respond to your question, the way this Blu-ray/DVD/book shelving unit is set up the boards that run from the bottom to the top of the unit that you install the shelves on are wider than the shelves themselves and each shelf is held in place by for small metallic plugs so they can be adjusted to any height and each of the small shelves that you insert into the unit are about 4 1/2" inches wide , but the total depth of the shelf from the back panel to the front of the vertical boards that hold the shelves are approximately 5 3/4" from the back board to the front.I hope this helps.Have a great day, Don B.

How many VHS tapes will this hold?

I don't have very many VHS tapes, but it holds at least 300 DVD's, and I'd expect it to take up about 3x the space for a VHS, so between 80-120 VHS tapes sounds about right.
