excellent pant (but price has more than doubled in the recent past. No more.
I'm a long distance thru- hiker. My weight fluctuates as I lose 20 pounds during the months on the trail and slowly gain it back before starting in these pants again. Sewn on buttons did not cut it for me. Even though mine pop when I gain weight during my off months, I prefer knowing that I have a waist button that is reliable. These deliver. Overall these pants are better constructed than the others that I have tried, and they are equally light.. Another key feature is that there is a zippered pocket on the left leg. I need to know that there is one zippered pocket. If you have extremely muscled thighs, these could be tight, but for me they work and I have average to big thighs- 5'10' 200lb as I set out. I. order the 34 waist The belt is cheap but it is fine for me and light weight. But the waist does seem to have a little give of it's own but not much. What tends to happen for me is that they are on tight side at the waist and even the thighs starting out, but after a few weeks on the trail the fit is perfect and by the second or third month, the belt is actually being used as an aide to keep them tight Bottom line they are true to size in my case..The possible drawback in construction for some, may be that there is no velcro around the ankle. In other words, you will need to take off your hiking boots while converting them into shorts or vice-versa. This is minor for me. Breaks are usually welcomed. I also like to wear them a lot when I'm not hiking. These pants are good for everyday use as well. They look good too esp. the dark colors. Highly recommended.

Recommended. Great for hiking.
I own 2 pairs of these so far and will probably order another. I really love these pants for my hiking and camping trips. I wear them all the time, and they are comfortable and well made. the convertible bottoms zip on and off pretty easy, and I like the length of shorts when zipped off. They dry fast, and keep me more comfortable in warm weather. I have not had any issues with seams tearing even during very active wear. The only drawback I have found so far is that the lining of the back pocket seems to tear at the bottom if you keep a wallet in that pocket. It has happened on both the pairs I own, but now I just opt to store my wallet in one of the side cargo pockets. Overall I highly recommend these for anyone looking to be active outdoors and stay comfortable while doing so. They look pretty nice too! Update: I am now planning on ordering my 3rd pair of these pants to use as hiking pants, finally having more than one color will be nice! I am still very happy with these pants, and they have held up very well in the time I have owned them, going with on many hiking trips. Another thing I love about these is the weight. For how durable they are, they are remarkably lightweight and work great for a spar set of pants in a backpack. I will be ordering 1 size up from my usual waist measurement though as I did last time, they seem to run a bit tight in that area.

My FAVORITE pair of pants/shorts!
One word for the Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pants.....A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I'm 26 years old. I was afraid I'd be judged and ridiculed by my peers for purchasing and overusing pants that turn into shorts. To be honest, I stopped listening to my friends after the first criticism because I was in paradise wearing these glorious pants. When I'm in these bad boys, I feel like I might as well just never take them off. Here's why: -The fabric feels like it was developed in the future and sent back to Columbia via time machine. There's no way you can make something SO comfortable with modern day textile factories. All kidding aside, I traveled 24 hours in planes in these pants and I can't think of anything better to wear. -Length and width were as advertised. The scary part of ordering clothes online are always the dimensions. You ask yourself "will I be getting another set of clown clothes?" Not in this case. Don't order too small in the waste, as the belt allows you tighten things up nicely. -Did I mention these turn into SHORTS?! I don't care if 40 year old men rock these all day, I'm right there with them. My friends were making fun of me until they started sweating their asses off in jeans. I simply zipped and ripped...bam I was wearing shorts!!! The zippers are very high quality, no snags and easy to reassemble (even though you look ridiculous if you put the shins back on while your wearing the shorts). All in all, these are great pants for walking long distances, traveling, and making everyone else look like an amateur. "Transform" your life and buy these bad boys. You won't give a crap what people say when your legs feel like they are resting in between sheets of pure joy.

Lightweight Hiking Pants
These pants are light-weight and seem to breathe pretty well. I've only gone hiking in them a couple of times and so far no quality issues have been observed. I'm not sure if most of these "convertible" pants have this feature, but one nice thing is that on the detachable portion the zipper has a left/right tag on the zipper, so you don't accidentally try putting the wrong leg on shorts. I have two complaints (well, one is really just more of a personal preference): - The first is I would prefer a longer shorts section. - The second that, especially on longer hikes (or hikes in Hawaii anyway) conditions can change and you figure that's why you'd want convertible pants... Maybe you need long pants for a bit and then shorts. I went on a hike the other week that when I started it was early and tad chilly so I wore the long pants. By the time I got to the top it was hot, humid and there was no wind and I wanted to take off the bottom parts of the pants. There wasn't really a great spot to sit down and the pant legs were too narrow to take off without removing my hiking shoes (Merrell Moab Ventilator Mid). A couple other pairs of convertible pants I have have zippers that run up the side part way that allow you to remove them without removing your shoes. Maybe that's a dumb complaint, but it bugged me. If that won't bother you then hey, great pants!

Worth every penny! These are built for backpacking
I ordered this product before going on a 5 day backpacking trip in Montana. I was a little nervous that these were the only pants I had for the whole week and they might rip. However these lasted the entire time and never had any problems. I love the fact you can zip off the legs when it's too hot as well. These are extremely lightweight and well made. I was a little skeptical that they wouldn't fit me as I am 6'4. The length was good but the waist was a little tight. Luckily these have an elastic type wasteband so they will stretch. I would say if you are serious about backpacking and going to be walking long distances through rain/weeds/brush/water then you will need pants that last and will also dry fast. These were extremely comfortable as well and kept me cool when walking long distances. I completed over 80 miles in 5 days and these still have a long life left.

Great for hiking through woods, camping, river rafting, etc.
Good pants for hiking and camping or, in my case, river rafting. The pants are a nice loose (but not overly baggy) fit, which combined with the nylon-ish material means even in the desert sun they don't feel too hot. And if they do, you can convert them to shorts. The material also is relatively water resistant and definitely quick drying, which made them great for river rafting. When my group left the river several times to do hikes through vegetation and such, I actually didn't remove the bottom parts as these pants provided good protection against thorns and other plants without feeling hot at all (despite the hot sun). These are a great set of outdoorsy pants for hikes, camping, rafting, etc. Good pockets too. The waist has a built in belt - I am usually a size 33 and since these only come in even sizes, I ordered a size 34. I had no problem at all - I probably didn't need the belt, but it allowed me to tighten them a bit further so they felt like a 33.

Tight in the Thighs + Rear Pockets Quickly Developed Holes Due to Weak Stitching
I like them for the first 5 times I wore them--mostly (they fit tight around the thighs). 5 belt loops are not enough to keep a belt from sliding up over the waistband. The convertible aspect was well thought out and functioned as required. After about the sixth time wearing them, the stitching on the back pockets began to fail. The pockets only every held a leather wallet in one side, and a men's comb in the other. It can't imagine what would happen if real gear where to be carried. Currently, neither rear pocket will hold anything. Note to Columbia!: Its a high traffic area--use stronger thread! I expect more from the brand than what these pants delivered. I won't buy these pants again nor recommend them to anyone, unless the manufacturer can convince me I got the one-off poorly made pair.

Waist and comfort is perfect. However, based on individual's height trimming needs to be done.
