It works well out of the box and quickly picked up an IP address from Xfinity. The admin console goes away for some reason once the modem has an IP address, so I'm not sure how to update its firmware and I assue that's automatic. This model is officially supported by the Comcast Xfinity network and I just had to give them its serial number and MAC address, which are fixed and written on the outside of the box.
