### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Essential Bix, if a little heavy on Paul Whiteman
*by W***E on July 11, 2011*

This is the 3rd Volume of 5 in the this series of Bix Restored. This Volume contains like 75 songs, 68 of which are Bix usually in the 2nd or 3rd Trumpet/Cornet Chair of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. He admittedly got some good solos for a few bars on a number of these tracks. Whiteman was known as "The King Of Jazz" back in these days, a rather hyperbolic statement, given that both King Oliver and the Jelly Roll King were still alive and kicking, but his popularity in the late 20's and early 30's was almost universal. Bix has some great moments with the Whiteman Orchestra, as detailed, track by track in both the booklet included with this CD and in more depth in Bix: The Leon Bix Beiderbecke Story , but frankly the multiple takes of Whiteman's Orchestra are neither the meat *or* the gravy of this set-- BUT... The following tracks are Bix with Frank Trumbauer & his Orchestra: Our Bungalow of Dreams, Lila, Borneo, My Pet (take B), My Pet (take C)and the four remaining tracks are by Bix Beiderbecke & his Gang: Somebody Stole My Gal, Thou Swell (test groove), Thou Swell (take A), Thou Swell (take C). Great stuff, all of it! And the sound on these discs is amazing, given the age and sources of the material! Personally, I don't care so much for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra material, much of which has nothing to do with "Jazz" at all, but I recognize that Bix's position with the band illustrates the level of Bix' fame at this point in his career, and that a position with Whiteman's Orchestra was about as high as one could aim as a professional musician at the time. Much more Bix, with Frankie and (at last) Hoagy will be found on Vol. 4-- this one's almost *all* Whiteman's Orchestra.
