However, I was very pleasantly surprised. The story is great and the acting is adept. Sometimes with 1970s series you feel as if you are watching the televisation of a play, not the case with this. The attention to period detail is sound and, for modern viewers now the late 1970s are a historical era of themselves, interesting to see in terms of technology and fashions. The story is brisk and engaging, with hazards and surprises, but credible. The time travel is handled well and still has the ability to jar you. In some ways the story comes over as more mature than much drama aimed at young people today. Perhaps viewers might feel that Penelope is rather earnest but she still seems believable. The star, though, is the late Elizabeth Bradley playing two very different characters in the two time periods. I watched all five episodes in one sitting and far from being disappointed, I was enthralled entirely anew and, of course, regretted that there was no sequel. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Good clean family entertainment from the 80's *by P***I on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2021* Excellent children's TV programme staring a young Sophie Thompson in her first TV role. Fans of The Detectorist will know Sophie as Terry's wife Shirley. I was pleased to be able to find this on DVD. For ages I had been trying to find it on Google but to no avail, I couldn't remember the title, just that it was about Mary Queen of Scots and the girl going back in time and the chest at the top of the stairs. Thankfully my hubby managed to find it. It is nostalgic children's TV at its best. Good clean family entertainment like it used to be in the 70's and 80's along with programmes like The Moon Stallion, Child of the Stones, Children of Green Knowe etc. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Greensleeves *by E***H on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2021* This was a blast from the past which reminded me why my young teenage self fell for the late Simon Gipps Kent back in the early ‘70s! I loved Alison Uttley’s magical book and this TV adaptation - filmed in the Babingtons’ actual home with all its Blue Peter connections - transported me right back to the 16th century. “Greensleeves” is such a hauntingly beautiful tune and now it is forever tied to Francis Babington.
