## Description

Gears of War 3

Review: Almost as good as gears 2 (edit) - As gears 2 is my 5 for this franchise, this one has to be a 4. I didn't like the story as much, I didn't like losing certain people, and I'd rather fight conventional locust over lambent whatevers. It's neat when they blow up the first few times, but it's ultimately just an annoyance. Other than those few things, this game is among the best in it's class. Would recommend without a doubt. EDIT: I've been achievement hunting and gave this game a thorough second look. I'm changing my rating to a 5 from a 4. Between arcade, versus, and horde this game really does set itself apart from the other games in the series. It never ceases to be a challenge, and maintains form as something I really enjoy plodding through. First, I tried the campaign on insane after finally trying the end all be all gears difficulty on gears: judgement, which was honestly a lot cheaper in how it kills you when it does (A LOT of frags). The story is still engaging to me, the game play is every bit as polished as any you could mention, and beating it was honestly satisfying. It wasn't miserable, and it wasn't easy. It was a firm lesson in strategy and pacing yourself. Great campaign, and arcade mode gives that little bit of competitive edge when playing with friends to really push it over the edge into my top 5 all time favorites. Next thing I tried was versus, where the pace is obviously a bit faster. Granted, there is a firm belief that cheap shotgun blasts to unaware opponents is a skill move, and I'm going to find that to be ridiculous in any game that has that dimension, but it isn't impossible to combat. Otherwise, the versus is engaging and it does seem fairly well balanced. There's not a lot of excessive explosives, there's always a chance of surviving your encounter. It's just a matter of figuring out what it is and if you can come away with a kill in the process. Good stuff. Then I tried horde, which I can only compare to firefight from halo. Waves of enemies that become increasingly difficult through rounds. The only thing about this that I find annoying is leveling up your ability to do things like building barriers or turrets. Obviously this is overcome with a bit of time, but I'm not a fan of giving advantages to players because they played a lot. Even playing fields are the basis of competition. It's a bit ridiculous when you're in a game with someone who pulls out a rocket baring silverback when you're in there trying to lancer a platoon of heavily health boosted grenadiers. Really cod, and not a fan. Last I tried beast mode, which is honestly just tacked on in my opinion. It can be fun to run around as a berserker or corpser, but for the most part, if I play much more of this variant, it'll be for instagib melee mutator and medals if I wind up caring to go for seriously 3.0. All in all, this game is awesome, and if you're into aggressive shooters this is one you shouldn't miss out on. If you're finding it too hard, give it some time, because it's worth it to pick up a little skill in this game. It's made me stronger in the other shooters I play between the recoil and strategy involved. Don't pass on the retro, and learn to play tag.
Review: A Fantastic Product for any Gears of War Fan - Gears of War 3 is an over-the-top third person shooter that encompasses the very reasons to own an Xbox 360: superb graphics, essentially flawless gameplay, and a surprisingly emotional campaign that brings a fitting close to the series. The campaign is a roller coaster of action and emotion; it follows the last remnants of the human race across the world of Sera, a planet that has been ravaged by war and suffering for the past one hundred years. The human race is on its last legs as it tries to fend off the inter-terrestrial Locust Horde and the new and infection Lambent creatures, which have the ability to burst forth from the ground anywhere and at any given time. The story follows Marcus Fenix and what remains of the disbanded Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) across the planet as Marcus tries to find his father who has been missing for years. Along the way, Marcus faces loss, confrontations with other humans who were abandoned (and killed) by the COG years ago, and ultimately he faces the fate of humanity. The graphics for this game are some of the best you will find on Xbox 360; with gorgeous backdrops, the grotesque and gnarled flesh of the Lambent, and highly detailed character models, you would be hard-pressed to find a game with better visuals than with this game. There are a great number of multiplayer modes to keep you occupied after you have finished the campaign; this includes (but is not limited to!): Horde 2.0, Beast Mode, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Guardian. Horde 2.0 is an ingenious blend of a tower defense game and a shooter. As you progress through waves in Horde 2.0, you obtain money, which you can use to buy anything from defensive walls to automatic turrets to a mannable robot known as the Silverback. The mode is up to five players, and each game can contain up to 50 waves of enemies which become progressively harder as you go on. In Beast Mode, you take control of Locust forces and try to kill all of the humans before time runs out; it is highly addictive and very fast paced (there are 12 rounds that take anywhere from 1-4 minutes each). Team Deathmatch is new to the Gears franchise; in this mode, your team is given 20 lives, and the first to drain the other team of those lives is the winner. The Player vs. Player aspect of Gears is very fast-paced and can deter newcomers; however, the people over at Epic Games have implemented new weapons such as the Sawed-Off Shotgun and the Retro Lancer in order to ease newcomers into the nitty-gritty multiplayer that is Gears. In the Epic Edition, you get a special case that holds Adam Fenix's (Marcus's dad) Octus Service Medal (which has a redeemable code for an Adam Fenix multiplayer character), and a few mementos to Adam's achievements as a scientist. The big draw of this Epic Edition is the statue of Marcus Fenix. This highly detailed statue is made of a sturdy material, and is gorgeously painted. The EE also comes with a cardboard diorama of other characters from the series that is supposed to be placed behind Marcus; however, the characters are not big enough to look "normal" when placed with the statue. Overall, the Epic Edition is a must-have for any hardcore Gears of War fan like myself! If you are just getting into the Gears series, I would highly recommend the normal edition of this game.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent End to a Great Series
*by M***S on March 27, 2013*

For those who don't have much time to read this: I would highly recommend this game. And if you are a fan of the series, you really should play this game. The level design is great, writing has improved, gameplay is relatively unchanged (good if you like it, and bad if you don't), and the ending is a satisfying conclusion to an overall great series. More in-depth review here: I have been a fan of the 'Gears of War' series since the first game was released, so I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. When I heard that 'Gears 3' was coming out, I was really excited to play it...but I never bought it (something about never having enough cash lying around or free time to play). I never heard any reviews about the game one way or another, so it was never on the top of my list of games to play. Well, a few weeks ago, I saw 'Gears 3' for sale on Amazon (only $15!) and that excitement to play came back. Still without sufficient time to immerse myself in the game, I figured it would be a project for me, play a level every night or so when I have some spare time...nothing ever seems to go as planned. I started to play this game and I couldn't stop. I loved everything about it. From the tutorial level (which takes place in a dream of Marcus Fenix) until the very end, I was taken aback by the beauty of the level design. I think this game does a good job of showing what the war has done to the planet. You get to see a lot more of the environment, and in some cases, the developers even seem to be showing off what they have done (I would too, they did a really good job with the art here). One problem a lot of people have with the series is the writing. Still not as good of a script as other games, like the 'Mass Effect' series, 'Gears 3' still shows improvement over the previous games in the series. There were moments in the game which really make you connect with the characters, something I thought was lacking in the previous games but is present here. By the end of the game, I could put myself in that environment and feel what it would be like to be in the position of the CoGs, something I like to see in video games because it shows the ability of the developers to use the medium to tell stories, just like movies and artwork. The gameplay, which is what has made this series popular, remains relatively unchanged. This is definitely a good thing. I don't have much else to say about this, if you like the gameplay, you'll like it here. If not, well, at least you know what to expect. The main reason I bought this game was because I wanted to see how everything was going to end. I've played a lot of series through to the end and a lot of them end in a completely different manner than what I would have liked to see. Considering the tone of the past games, the ending of 'Gears 3' fits perfectly. **Semi-Spoiler Alert: Skip to the next paragraph if you don't want to know ANYTHING about the end of the game** Even though the ending is not the most uplifting way for the series to end, it is exactly how I would want this series to finish, which I can't say about a lot of other series. Overall, I think the main strengths of this game are its Level Design/Artwork, Gameplay (since I am a fan of how 'Gears' does it), and Story. For weaknesses, if I have to pick, I would say Character Development (of course the entire series had mediocre character development, so I wasn't expecting much. On the other hand, this game has better character development than the previous 2). If you chose to buy this game, you won't be disappointed. Oh, I forgot to mention this: the "shock value" for this series has always been the gore. This one is no different. There always seem to be new ways go around and neutralize the enemy, hence the Mature (M) ESRB rating.
