## Description

Product description Rack Mount Rail 1U with 16x Ethernet Surge Protectors protects 16 lines, and it's ready to mount into rackmount slot on 19" (inch) (1U) data protection rack server cabinet panel. Each Ethernet Surge Protector is a surge protection device (SPD) that is inserted inline on an RJ45 CAT6/CAT5/CAT5e cable to prevent damage of electronic networking equipment. Each single protector on the rail can be replaced with single compatible Tupavco item TP309 (ASIN: B078NKGPJC). Powerful surges that the device protects against include direct lightning strikes, voltage spikes, or PoE overvoltages. Despite the primary protection (a direct strike to a line), the thunder arrestor also offers secondary protection, which will arrest EMF induced surges (nearby lightning ethernet). Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are developed to overcome some of the disadvantages of diode-based protectors like energy handling capability and is suitable for almost all surge, whether high or low frequency, it can be intercepted by a gas discharge tube surge arrester so it provides a rigorous spark discharge control performance. Ethernet Surge Suppressor TP316 use a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) on all 4 pairs (8 wires). Gas discharge tubes dissipate the voltage transient through a contained plasma gas which harnesses excess voltage in the incoming power and releases it safely. It ensures the safety of a wide array of valuable components such as switch, router, modem, bridge, repeater, or any part of internet service network. 16 Lines/Ports RJ45 Lightning Protection for Gigabit 10/100/1000 (GbE) and High PoE+ Networks The gigabit surge protector date rate of Gigabit 10/100/1000 (GbE) transfer supports an ultra-fast maximum data rate of 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps - 1000 Mbps) and does not affect the speed performance in the local area network. POE Surge Protector allows a single RJ-45 cable to provide both data connection and electric power to device such as wireless access point, IP and security camera, VoIP phone, computer and others. Surge Arrestor TP303 is designed to protect PSE (power-supply equipment) connected to a network from transient overvoltages. The lightning protector PoE supports both Mode A (Pins 1,2+ 3,6-) and B (7,8+ 4,5-) of the 802.3af standard. 802.3af (PoE) can deliver up to 15.4 watts per port with 12.95W at the powered device, while 802.3at (PoE+) can deliver up to 30 watts with 25.5 watts available to devices. PoE Plus is also known as High PoE . Installation The rackmount must be properly grounded to work through the shortest path. Excess electricity will follow the path of least resistance. In most cases, a ground busbar on an electrical panel or network rack cabinet is already grounded and is typically the easiest way to ground the wire. Other options to ground RJ45 surge protector are grounding block on the breaker panel or grounding rod. The lightning arrestor can be used with unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or shielded (STP) cables. Protection Modes Line-Line, Line-Ground The Line-to-Line ethernet surge protection mode helps protect against short circuits between different nodes of the network system while the Line-to-Ground mode protects against short circuits between the network node and the earth. As it is not known where the transient will happen, having both modes protected ensures damage is minimized. Nominal Discharge Current of 5KA defines the peak value of the current that can be passed through the SPD having a waveshape of 8/20μs microsecond where the RJ45 lightning arrestor remains functional after 15 surges. Specifications Investing in a easy to install surge protector rack with all of the needed features and proven reliability can be the safest and most cost-effective solution for protecting your whole Ethernet network. Response time < 100 ns Operating Temperature -40°C (-40°F) to +80°C (+176°F) Outside Dimensions (W*L*H) 26*26*68 mm Each (of 16) ethernet surge protectors is replaceable Multidirectional Ethernet network surge protector works in both directions (IN/OUT), so the source input signal cable can be connected to any side. It is not important which side the equipment is behind, however the surge protector will protect networking equipment only on the opposite side of where surge occurs. To protect devices on both sides, it is recommended to have one of the surge protectors on each end of the RJ45 cable in the network topology. Nominal Discharge Current (8/20μs): 5 KA Nominal PoE voltage : <60V PoE current up to 1.2A PoE Mode Support Mode A and B for Power Tested standards IEC 61643-21, IEC61000-4-5 Clamping Voltage Line-Ground: 72 Volts Clamping Voltage Line-Line: 72 Volts

Review: No interference with signal - I installed this surge protector between my cable modem and my router today. Easy peasy. Plug the Ethernet cables into each end (marked "Line" and "Equip") and attach the ground terminal to something grounded. (I used a 12AWG solid wire and a ground screw on my uninterruptible power supply.) Running Ookla Speedtest verified no degradation of signal. Hopefully, I'll never find out if it works.
Review: Very high quality surge protector. - I was blowing one port on my router nearly every electrical storm. Frontier i think was getting tired of replacing them as i lost four routers in five months. I live on the highest natural point in central florida which is reported to have more lighting strikes than any place in the USA. Since i installed this i haven't lost a Ethernet port and have gone through one hurricane and seventeen major electrical storms. When I installed it i used one of the ideas of another reviewer thank you by the way. I did not use the ground wire supplied by the vendor but ran a 12 AWG multi strand wire from the unit to a three prong 15 amp replacement; plug's grounding pin. All other pins or spades on the plug remained empty and covered internally with heat shrink. Plugged into a outlet within three feet of the surge protector. Fantastic solution will now add these to all my ports entering the router and at my ORBI Wifi units.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this protect poe++ or just poe+?**
A: From the manufacturer's website

Nominal PoE Voltage <60 V
Maximum continuous current 1.2 A

Therefore you should be able to get 60 watts continuous, or Type 3 PoE++

**Q: What is a "gas discharge tube", and what is its function in this device?**
A: A gas discharge tube is basically a over voltage protector. It is an open circuit until impinging high voltage enters an ionizes the gas inside which creates a low impedance presumably to ground. Only useful in a lightning incident (nearby or direct hit). If the latter then you are fundamentally screwed. I have photos to probe it.

Message: if lightning is near (or predicted) then simply disconnect everything. Let us ALL float. I’m talking antennas, AC power cord and ground wires

**Q: Does this device support 24v passive poe?**
A: YES , this will easily support 24volt passive or non-passive POE.
Normally POE is 48volts on power injectors or network switches.
I know that it will support over 60 volts, as to smart 3 lens outdoor cameras that i have installed at Banks.
This is , if you ground the DIN rail correctly to allow gas discharge tube to function
properly to protect equipment. Gas discharge tube opens and closes data circuit,
with no ground it will just act as a fuse and burn up after lightning strike.
I always use TWO ethernet surge protectors , one on network switch rack and
one upon entry into building with both TWO DIN rails grounded.
Daniels Data Inc. - Dallas,TX - John Daniels

**Q: How long of a rail do you need? What is the shortest length that I can use?**
A: It mounts perpendicular to the dinrail so about 1” is minimum. I’d use enough too have two acres in the rail though or it will rotate.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well made and grounded, but not shielded
*by N***S on January 16, 2023*

This surge protector is clearly well-made (and others have mentioned that it saved their equipment). The metal RJ45 jack frames are connected to each other and to the ground connection, so it is compatible with shielded cable in the sense that it will conduct the shield connection. However, the device itself is not shielded (I took it apart to inspect how it was constructed). The case is plastic, so the device is a potential source of EMI entry. If you're looking for a shielded version that is completely encased in metal connected to ground, see Tupavco's TP302 (https://amzn.to/3IRJsaq) and my review about it.
