The majority of doctors are ill at ease when confronted by a patient with a neurological problem. Candidates for qualifying examinations and higher diplomas dread that they will be allocated a neurological 'Iong case'. This is a serious reflection on the adequacy of training in neurology. It is still possible in some medical schools for a student to go through the entire clinical course without an attachment to the neurological unit. Increasing competition for teaching time has led to the situation where in most US medical schools, and at least one new medical school in the UK, a two-week c1inical attachment to the neurology service is considered adequate. Those fortunate enough to attend a postgraduate course find a minimum of 3 months' intensive training is necessary before any confidence in tackling a neurological problem is achieved. Unfortunately, neurological textbooks seldom seem to recognize the intensely practical nature of the subject. There are many short texts that achievebrevity by the exclusion of explanatory material; these are difficult to read and digest. At the opposite extreme are the neurological compendia, often unbalanced by excessive coverage of rare diseases and all based on the assumption that patients announce on arrival that they have a demyelinating, heredofamilial, neoplastic etc. disorder. These texts are useful only to those who already have a good working knowledge of neurological diseases. Review: Great book! I am using this book to study ... - Great book! Definitive text for neuroanatomical diagnosis
This is a superb book if not the definitive text on making an anatomic clinical diagnosis in neurology. I have bought several copies over the years but far prefer the first edition. The reader is a JD not an MD an appears only interested in one condition not the art of diagnosis. Today too many people rely on MRI and tests, the art of Neurology is in taking a history, examining the patient and reaching a clinical diagnosis. As a Neurosurgery trainee I once got to meet Dr. Patton, it was an honour.

Neurological Bible for the General Physician, GP & Medical Student
Since I first met the first edition of this book some years ago it has never been far from my side. It provides a first rate insight into neuroanatomy and clinical neurology and will be of inestimable value from the medical student trying for the first time to grasp the importance of neuroanatomy and liking it to a clinical subject they may not yet have confronted; through the recently qualified doctor studying for higher professional exams; to the practising doctor who wants to remind themselves of this vast subject its subtle clinical signs and updates in investigation. My only disappointment was the loss of the larger format of the first edition and the inevitably smaller reproduction of the superb diagrams. But alas I suspect that the the book has become a victim of the expansion of the fascinating material which needs to be kept with in a manageable publication size.
