Normon Solomon's succinct book is an ideal introduction to Judaism as a religion and way of life. Demonstrating the diverse nature and ethnic origin of Jewish people, Solomon explores how the religion has developed in the 2,000 years since the days of the Bible. This Very Short Introduction starts by outlining the basics of practical Judaism, including: festivals, prayers, customs, and various sects - and goes on to consider how Judaism has responded to, and dealt with, a number of key issues and debates, including the impact of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. In this new edition, Solomon considers issues of contemporary Judaism in the 21st century, incorporating new material on the relationship between the Muslim faith and Judaism, the rise of Zohar and Kabala, and considers how the faith deals with issues such as homosexuality and gay marriage. Out of all of the books assigned, this one was best written. The information is concise, but it is enough for a beginner like myself. Review: Everything you ever wanted to know about Judiasm - The book covered an amazing amount of information and material in a relatively condensed manner. Not highly detailed, but well-written and most interesting. An easy read.

A lot of detail crammed into a very small book so I do recommend it.
Just started to read it but it seems a very comprehensive look at the history, culture and religion of Judaism as lived by the people. A lot of detail crammed into a very small book so I do recommend it.

Meh
If you know nothing (or next to nothing) about the roots and development of the Jewish faith, I'm afraid this book will not help you. It is shallow, disorganized and misguided (and as some reviewers have already remarked, it seems to think zionism IS "Judaism"; which it isn't. Politics is not Religion by another name; nor vice versa). I'm not sure what I thought I was buying when I ordered this book, but this is definitely not what I wanted. Unlike some other works in the series, it left me as ignorant as when I started. If this book is to be believed, Judaism is just a mishmash of serendipitous notions. It has no intellectual foundation, no coherence and no identifiable traditions. What a pity.

Great overview of Judaism
It’s good to know judaism from cultural and historical aspect. So many traumatic things are happening, which might lead us to the enlightenment and eternal blessings. This book could be a good introduction to the deeper understanding and appreciation of our time.
