Neil Young's second solo album, 1969's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere cracked the Top 40, went platinum and included three of his most beloved songs, "Cinnamon Girl" and the nearly 10-minute epics "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand." The music on this album was fresh--it was a harder form of West Coast folk-rock, recorded deliberately with few takes in the studio--and the album showcased the wonderful guitar interplay between Neil Young and Danny Whitten. The album included a number of extraordinary songs, among them being: "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl In The Sand", and "Down By The River." And, since the album's release, its music has certainly received plenty of airplay on the radio from coast to coast (and deservedly so!) It can be said that this album has passed the crucial test of time, and as a result, it is well worth a listen, even today! Neil Young made a distinct mark for himself earlier in the California folk-rock scene as a member of the popular, but short-lived group, Buffalo Springfield, with his outstanding songwriting and guitar playing. However, Neil Young's contributions to the band were overshadowed to a degree with the songwriting by fellow band member, Stephen Stills, and the singing by Richie Furay. The group's first single entitled, "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", was released in 1966, shortly after the group's formation. The song was written by Neil Young. The group's mega-hit that year, "For What It's Worth", a protest song, was released sometime soon thereafter, and it was written by Stephen Stills. Unfortunately, the group's music was not being well produced at the time, and this deficiency was one factor that prompted Neil Young to seek someone else to produce his work in the studio. Here, he found Jack Nitzsche, a well-known producer who had worked with The Rolling Stones. Neil Young even went to the extreme and left the band entirely for a brief period of time to pursue his work in the studio in a different manner, and on his own terms, with Nitzsche's assistance. The result of this collaboration was a wonderful song by Neil Young entitled, "Expecting to Fly." Because Neil Young returned to the group shortly thereafter, the song was fortunately included on Buffalo Springfield's second album, "Buffalo Springfield Again." The album was released in October of 1967. Neil Young's solo album was recorded in January of 1969, and it was released in May of that year. At about the same time, Stephen Stills, Neil Young's former colleague from the Buffalo Springfield, joined David Crosby, a close friend from The Byrds and Graham Nash, another friend from the British band, The Hollies, to form a vocal band named, "Crosby, Stills, and Nash." The trio released a well-received album, also a gem and a milestone in rock history, only two weeks after the release of Neil Young's solo album! At the suggestion of the president of the record company, Neil Young joined the trio in the studio in a collaboration of sorts. The result was magnificent! The album entitled, "Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young", was yet another gem. And, it is worthy to note here that the group performed together live for the second time only at the infamous mega-concert of that time, Woodstock, in August of that same year!! The Real Neil Young
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the Neil Young/Crazy Horse album to have! This is Neil Young rocking out big time, his guitar riff duels with Danny Whitten are especially crunchy on Down By The River. Neil Young never did get enough credit for his funky riffs. You get the eclectic melancholy Young in songs like Round and Round and Running Dry, you get the country flavor of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, you get a top forty pop rocker with Cinnamon Girl and the quintessential rock ramble of Cowgirl In The Sand in one short, sweet album. When this album was released all the college late night AOR FM stations were playing cuts, then it became too popular to be "cool" and then a few years later people looked back and said that maybe, just maybe, this is as good as it got with Neil Young? Not as popular as Harvest, not as off-kilter as After The Goldrush or as well known as his collaboration with Crosby, Stills and Nash. EKTIN is where Buffalo Springfield was heading had they survived, I think. If you loved Mr. Soul or Expecting To Fly then this album will be a favorite! Neil is said to have written two or three of the songs with a 103.5 fever. But he hadn't really started to rust yet. Enjoy!

Nice Vinyl Remaster
The vinyl version is better than the CD...( I have both) The CD is actually an HDCD. which is fine as long as you have a player that will read and play HDCD. In that case you will get better than CD quality out of it... And more that likely you will not have any problems with it. If not and you only have a regular CD player that is not capable of reading and playback of HDCD, you will actually get less than CD quality out of the CD.(15 bits instead of 16 bits max resolution).....I think this illustrates one of the problems with Hi rez music files...The answer is not always just throwing more bits at the problem...Using more bits increases the chance for errors, greater computations must be made at higher speeds and so recording and mastering must use more sophisticated equipment, and also more diligences skill and understanding is needed for the process to be successful. Playback also must use equipment of a higher grade and speed that is capable of keeping up with all the additional bits speed and information available...If not often the results are less than desirable, and the outcome is often a lesser product ...As all the remastered 2nd and third addition CD's ca attest to. So higher bit rate does promise the theory of better music playback but it does not guarantee it, nor is it necessarily going to be so...In fact the opportunities for error increases all through the chain making the window for higher quality playback smaller.

YOU CAN GROW
This album will make you grow, either as a musician or an appreciator. This is from the time of highly inspired guitar work that alternates between mellow and frenzied, smooth and percussive. I bought it for Cowgirl in the Sand, which I happened to hear on a classic rock radio station a year ago. I knew I had to have that album. Luckily all the songs are fantastic and they blend together really well to create a very solid album. Not a lot of songs, but each one is a very long and thoughtful voyage. I was born in the mid-80s, so I have absolutely no business associating with this type of music: but the character of Neil Young and the very spirited contributions of Crazy Horse make me dream I could have been a part of this time. Music was more for performance, unlike the pervasive electronic djs and tape-runners of the new century; yet while it was performance driven it did not have the desperate urge to show off virtuoso skills or one's vigilante image of which the 80s and 90s saw so much. Any person who likes this kind of stuff, especially in this time, will probably have a refined sense of sentimentality, of history, of vintage excellence and style.

Dal mio punto di vista, questo è il miglior disco di Neil Young. Contiene dei capisaldi come "Cinnamon girl" e "Down by the river" ed il buon Neil è in forma smagliante, ed in aggiunta è accompagnato da musicisti di prim'ordine. Disco da avere assolutamente!!!

Erstklassige Schnulzen? Aber ja!
Um nicht missverstanden zu werden: das Wort "Schnulze" ist bei mir nicht von vorn herein negativ belegt. Ich mag Schnulzen, gute natürlich, besonders wenn sie so zahlreich und gekonnt, wie auf diesem Album, daherkommen! Manchmal geht's zwar in diesem Album hart an die Kitschgrenze, aber sie wird hier von N. Y. nicht wirklich überschritten, wozu er ja durchaus in der Lage ist. Ich sag nur: "Heart Of Gold"... Ja, ich weiß, der Young kann auch ganz anders, aber darum geht's mir, an dieser Stelle jedenfalls, nicht. Dieses Album mochte ich schon immer, aber stets mit dem Wermutstropfen der sehr mauen Klangqualität. Ich habe das nie so recht verstehen können, wieso sich der sog. Garagensound bei einigen Zeitgenossen solcher Beliebtheit erfreuen konnte und noch kann. Auch Anfang der 70er Jahre gab es schon erstklassige Aufnahmetechniken; wozu also dieses Understatement? Und jetzt, endlich, hat zwar ein paar Jahrzehnte gedauert, läuft mir diese neu gemischte CD über den Weg. Hat er sich doch tatsächlich aufgerafft, der alte Zausel, und seine Abneigung gegen CD und neumodischen Kram überwunden. Klar ginge es noch ein wenig besser, aber dieser unsägliche Watte-im-Ohr-Effekt, der das Vergnügen doch schmälerte, ist durch das digitale Remastering deutlich reduziert worden. Und das honoriere ich hier mit satten 5 Sternen! Noch ein Tipp für die, die gute Schnulzen zu schätzen wissen: der Jagger kann das auch sehr gut: Wer "Evening Gown", "Party Doll" oder "Angel In My Heart" kennt (zu finden auf diversen Solo-Alben), weiß was ich meine. Leider sind die aber nicht auf einem Album zu haben. Schade eigentlich ;-)

first studio recording with Crazy Horse
I know this album as the "fever" album. "Cinnamon Girl", "Down by the River", and "Cowgirl in the Sand" were written in a single day while Young had a 103 °F (39.5 °C) fever. It's also his first studio album with Crazy Horse backing.....Guitarist, songwriter and singer Danny Whitten, bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina had already been performing and recording together as The Rockets. They met Young through the Laurel Canyon music scene and started playing together. Neil really loved how Danny Whitten played his music........quote: " A really great second guitar player, the perfect counterpoint to everything else that was happening. His style of playing was so adventuresome. So sympathetic. So unthoughtful. And just so natural. That’s really what made "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Down by the River" happen: Danny’s guitar parts. Neil also wanted to capture the raw sound of him and Crazy Horse without too much rehearsing, takes or overdubs, so it was produced pretty quickly. Neil said, "Really literally, we'd only been together for six or seven days when "Down By The River" was cut. I just wanted to go ahead and do it, I just wanted to catch it, because there is something on those records that was recorded like it was when we were really feeling each other out, you know, and we didn't know each other, but we were turned on to what was happening. So I wanted to record that, because that never gets recorded. And that's what that album is, it's just the bare beginnings. This was Neil's first great album, IMHO, and was followed by "After the Gold Rush" 1970 (which was supposed to be a music score for a screenplay......quote, "Dean Stockwell came by the house with a screenplay called After the Gold Rush. He had co-written it with Herb Bermann and wanted to know if I could do the music for it." Harvest (1972), came after that and then followed by "On the Beach" 1974........to me these are Neil's 4 best solo albums although I love alot of his later stuff as well.

Todo lo que uno le puede a Neil...
Es uno de los mejores discos de Neil y el sonido de la rendición es increíble. El gatefold está cuidadísimo y, para acabar pronto, es un álbum que todos deberían de escuchar.
