Sanford Meisner was one of the best known and beloved teachers of acting in the country. This book follows one of his acting classes for fifteen months, beginning with the most rudimentary exercises and ending with affecting and polished scenes from contemporary American plays. Written in collaboration with Dennis Longwell, it is essential reading for beginning and professional actors alike. Throughout these pages Meisner is a delight—always empathizing with his students and urging them onward, provoking emotion, laughter, and growing technical mastery from his charges. With an introduction by Sydney Pollack, director of Out of Africa and Tootsie , who worked with Meisner for five years. "This book should be read by anyone who wants to act or even appreciate what acting involves. Like Meisner''s way of teaching, it is the straight goods."—Arthur Miller "If there is a key to good acting, this one is it, above all others. Actors, young and not so young, will find inspiration and excitement in this book."—Gregory Peck Review: Must Read!!!!!!! - Got to recommend this book purely because I was stuck using the method of actioning training in the second year of uni. This has opened my eyes to what acting is about, being realistic and truthful. It gives an insight of what Meisner teaches and his method of how to prepare for any scene as an actor. Definitely using his method from now on! Review: A must read for actors! - There's really nothing left to say about Meisner that has not already been said. I can see why he earned himself a name in drama. Here is the key thing I got from him - Acting is simplicity. Actors tend to over complicate things a lot. This is just an essential book for any aspiring actor! Buy it. It's practical as well.

Must have for new actors!
If you're new to the acting scene, this book is a must-read. The Meisner technique is referenced in many acting courses, and this book gives you an in-depth look at the technique as well as the reasoning behind it.

Very Good, but not the Best
This is a damn good read, BUT i would rather recommend you read Jerimiah Comeys book on meisners method than this one. It will take you more trough what the acting is, while this book is more about how meisners classes was and how he was as a teacher.

As a Meisner student I found this book as a good introduction to my classes
Sydney explains and describes the lessons that Sanford Meisner had with his students. As a Meisner student I found this book as a good introduction to my classes, however I think book although very good is not enough to learn practice technique and it's best just to find a teacher who is Meisner trained.

Excellent
An excellent reference for both students and professional actors wanting to refresh their craft. It's a well thought out presentation - it takes you through a course of Meisner's classes, so it's not a tedious list of intellectual shpeak but examples in action, with comments both from Meisner and observations of him by the transcriber. This will be a well thumbed copy. Much easier read (and more effective) than Stanislavsky's bibles and provides the logic of why to keep away from the cliché Strasberg mal-interpretation of Stan's method/system. Highly recommended.

An insight of human nature and acting
Meisner is a bleessing to the acting world , and this book gives you what his technique is. Not only does it help you in acting but also in life. You are not the same person after you learn Meisner technique , although it takes 20 years to become an actor as per Meisner.
